Lectoype (designated here): — BRAZIL. Rio Grande do Sul: Rio Pardo, campo, 16 October 1823, F. Sello s.n. (G-00405797!) ( Fig. 7 ).

Distribution and habitat: — Euphorbia stenophylla grows in high montane habitats, within open vegetation, frequently in slopes with water bodies nearby, in Uruguay, northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil ( Smith et al. 1988, Berry et al. 2008). In SC this species has been collected in the following municipalities: Abelardo Luz, Água Doce, Bom Jardim da Serra, Campos Novos, Lages, São Joaquim and Xanxerê.

Conservation status: —Least Concern (LC).

Notes: —The protologue of Tithymalus stenophyllus gives the following information for typification purposes: “Hab. in Brasilia (Sello).”. Considering that Johann Friedrich Klotzsch (1805–1860) was in Berlin when this name was published, the best choice for a lectotype would have been the specimens which were kept at B (negative of which kept at F, code F-BN-18068), but were destroyed when this herbarium was bombed in March 1943. Therefore we designate here as lectotype for T. stenophyllus a duplicate of the type at Candolle’s herbarium (G-00405797; Fig. 7 ), which to the best of evidence is the only extant original material for this name.
