Lymnaea columella (Say, 1817) View in CoL
We found one specimen of L. columella in an artificial pond for keeping ornamental fish and water lilies. This site was on Water Island in a private garden, and the pond was not connected to any natural drainages. This species has been reported as widespread in Puerto Rico ( van der Schalie 1948; Ferguson and Richards 1963; Harry and Hubendick 1964), but not between Puerto Rico and Venezuela ( Harry and Hubendick 1964). This is the first record from the Virgin Islands.
Two genera are known from the Caribbean: Physa and Stenophysa ; S. marmorata (Guilding 1828) has been reported from St. John ( Smith and Brousseau 1996). We did not encounter Stenophysa in our surveys.
