Callinectes sp.

The Portunidae has several representative species in the US Virgin Islands. We observed one large adult animal in the boardwalk channel at Yacht Haven Grande on St. Thomas, but the animal escaped. The remains of another were found on Dorothea ghut, St. Thomas, on the lower coastal segment, approximately 0.5 km from the sea; only a few legs and some body fluids were present, suggesting that it was preyed upon by a Yellow Crowned Night Heron ( Gardner et al. 2008). Other remains were found at Yacht Haven Grande channel and in Magens Beach, in freshwater.

Rathbun (1933), Beatty (1968) and Chase and Hobbs (1969) provide records of C. danae (Smith, 1869) , C. marginatus (A. Milne Edwards, 1861) , and C. ornatus (Ordway, 1863) from St. Thomas, St. Croix and Puerto Rico, and of C. bocourti (A. Milne Edwards, 1879) , C. exasperatus (Gerstaecker, 1856) , and C. sapidus (Rathbun, 1895) from St. Croix and Puerto Rico. Platenberg (2006) included pictures and listed C. sapidus from mangroves and salt ponds from St. Thomas and St. John, but no location records were provided.
