Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 A-F
Material studied. Holotype. ♂. MYANMAR, N.E. Burma, Kambaiti, 2000 m, 4. VI. 1934, Malaise (in MZH). Paratypes. Same data as holotype, but 7.VI. 1934, 3 ♂♂ (in MZH).
Description. ♂. Head. Palp yellowish to brownish, other mouthparts and face yellow to yellowish, posterior parts of head brownish to brown. Antenna brownish, scape, pedicel and base of 1st flagellomere yellow. Length of 1st flagellomere about 4x, 2nd flagellomere 2.5x, its width. Thorax. Pronotum yellow, with 3 long setae. Scutum yellow with 3 indistinct, light brownish, longitudinal stripes. Anepisternum and preepisternum yellow. Scutellum yellowish, with 4 long setae. Laterotergite yellowish. Mediotergite yellowish, bare. Wing. Length 3.3–3.5 mm. Wing hyaline. Sc ending in R1 near or slightly proximally to middle of small cell, Sc1 missing or rudimentary. Apical part of Sc bearing 2–7 small setae. Small cell about 1.5x as long as wide. Cu fork distal to M fork. M ratios: 0.86–1.13, 1.17–1.46. Cu ratios: 0.92–1.02, 1.27–1.76. Small setae: M petiole: 0; M1: 0; M2: 0; Cu petiole: 0; Cu1: 0; Cu2: 0. Halter yellowish, apically darker. Legs. Coxae and femora yellow, tibiae and tarsi brownish to brown. Coxa 2 without spur. Leg ratios: bt1:t1 = 0.87–0.89, bt2:t2 = 0.69.0.70, bt3:t3 = 0.57–0.60. Abdomen. Tergites 1– 5 yellowish to brownish, with narrow indistinct brownish posterior margins, 6–7 brownish. Sternites 1–5 yellow, 6–7 brownish. Hypopygium. Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 A–F: yellowish. Tergal part with two pairs of combs. Outer tergal combs widely and deeply separated from each other, both with about 8 spines. Inner combs both with about 7 slightly flattened spines. Tergal lateral appendage long, about 3x as long as its wide basal part, tapering towards apex, widely setose, with 2–3 flattened, curved apical-subapical setae ( Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 C–D). Sternal submedian filament long, curved, extending clearly beyond apex of aedeagus. Gonostylus at least 6x as long as wide, with 7 subapical teeth, 1 seta, and small lateral membranous lobe less than 1/3 of length of main branch of gonostylus ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 E). Aedeagus with 2 slender, medially curved apical lobes.
Discussion. The male hypopygium of M. irena resembles those of Chinese M. fanjingana Yang & Wu, 1988, M. rivalisa Wu, 1998 and M. ganglioneuse Wu et al., 2001 in having a long, densely setose tergal lateral appendage and a long, curved sternal submedian filament. Mycomya fanjingana , which was described from Guizhou, southern China, differs from M. irena e.g. in its small size (wing length 2.0– 3.1 mm) and in having the gonostylus with five subapical teeth and a very small membranous lateral lobe. The basal part of the tergal lateral appendage is not wide in M. rivalisa , described from Zhejiang, eastern China, and the apical setae of its tergal lateral appendage form a spine-like apex pointing outwards in the direction of the apex of the tergal lateral appendage (Wu 1998: figs. 6–9), not curving back as in M. irena ( Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 C–D). Mycomya ganglioneuse , known from Zhejiang, has a very long setose apical part of the tergal lateral appendage, but its apex seems to lack both the curved setae and the long apical setae. There are groups of at least five long setae on both sides below its tergal combs (Wu et al. 2001: figs. 1–4), whereas M. irena has only two setae in each group. The gonostyli of both M. rivalisa and M. ganglioneuse have only 4 apical teeth.
Etymology. The species name is a noun in apposition and refers to the generic name of the Asian fairybluebird, Irena puella (Latham).
