Centaurea centaurium Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 910. 1753.

"Habitat in Alpibus Gargano, Baldo, Tataria." RCN: 6583.

Lectotype (Dittrich in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 31. 1993): Herb. Clifford: 421, Centaurea 7 (BM-000647256) .

Current name: Rhaponticoides centaurium (L.) M.V. Agad. & Greuter View in CoL ( Asteraceae ).

Note: In order to prevent Cnicus L. from becoming the correct name for Centaurea L. , sensu stricto, Greuter & al. (in Taxon 50: 1201. 2002) successfully proposed the conservation of Centaurea with C. paniculata L. as its conserved type, in place of C. centaurium .
