Type Locality: Egypt.
Vernacular Names: Hamadryas Baboon.
Synonyms: Papio aegyptiaca ( Gray 1870) ; Papio arabicus Thomas 1900 ; Papio brockmani Elliot 1909 ; Papio chaeropitheus ( Lesson 1840) ; Papio cynamolgus ( Linnaeus 1758) ; Papio nedjo (Reichenbach 1863) ; Papio wagleri (Agassiz 1828) .
Distribution: Arid zone of Red Sea coast of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, N Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: Includes anubis , cynocephalus , papio , and ursinus according to Szalay and Delson (1979:336), but see Jolly and Brett (1973:85), Dandelot (1974:9), Corbet and Hill (1980:88), Groves (2001 c) and others who recognized these as distinct species.
