Panapulla strongyliformis Nelson View in CoL , new species

( Figs. 1–5 View Figs )

Description. Holotype female. Body elongate subcylindrical; dark bluishblack with iridescent reflections; head and pronotum appreciably narrower than elytra. Ventral surface sparsely, finely punctate with few semirecumbent hairlike setae that are longer and semierect toward apex of abdominal sterna.

Head moderately convex, flattened between upper half of eyes with fine median sulcus, deep depression between middle of eyes and another between small supraantennal ridges, ridges continue to clypeus that is triangularly emarginate; surface of head with scattered, moderatesized punctures, without setae; labrum roundly truncate apically; terminal maxillary palpomere slightly dilated, obovate; labium rounded apically; terminal labial palpomere ovate. Eyes finely faceted, inner margins slightly converging above; antennae reaching humeri when laid alongside; antennomere 1 elongate clavate; 2 short, transversely triangular; 3 triangular 2× wider than long; antennomeres 4–11 broadly, roundly triangular, length ratios from 1–11: 3.3; 1.0; 1.2; 2.7; 2.5; 2.5; 2.3; 2.3 2.2; 2.0; 1.8; antennomeres 3–11 each with large sensory apical fovea on inner surface.

Pronotum width to length ratio 1.4 to 1.0, barely wider than head, narrower than elytra; lateral margins carinate in posterior third, subparallel in posterior sixth, then slightly expanded and then weakly converging anteriorly, narrowest at anterior angles; anterior margin concavely emarginate; posterior margin slightly oblique posteriorward to middle; disk strongly transversely convex without evident impressions but with three welldefined foveae along posterior margin, one midline and one on each side ⅔ to lateral margin; surface glabrous, sparsely finely punctate with punctures less fine laterally. Scutellum small, cordiform, surface glabrous with several faint shallow punctures.

Elytra wider than pronotum at base; lateral margins gradually expanded from rounded humeri to apical third, then arcuately converging to tridentate apices, anterior tooth at level of suture between abdominal sterna 4 and 5; disk moderately convex with basal depressions toward humeri; striae each with single row of punctures; intervals glabrous, weakly convex at base becoming strongly convex apically with alternate intervals more strongly so; with few short, inconspicuous, hairlike setae toward apex.

Prosternum with process weakly convex with fine lateral sulcus; its cavity formed by mesosternum laterally and metasternum apically; metasternum with fine midline sulcus; metacoxa moderately expanded medially; femora slender, fusiform, without ridges or sulci; tibiae slender, each with two apical spurs; protibia weakly arcuate, acutely produced at outer apical angle; mesotibia more arcuate than protibia; metatibia straight; protarsomeres 1–4 subequal in length, 5 slightly longer; mesotarsus with 1 slightly longer than 2, 2–4 subequal in length, 5 longer than 1; metatarsomere 1 and 5 subequal in length, 1.5 × longer than any of 2–4 that are subequal in length.

Abdomen with sterna 1–4 narrowly margined laterally; acutely produced at posterolateral angles; suture between sterna 1 and 2 distinct; disk of last visible sternum convex, punctures larger and more dense than elsewhere, apex roundly truncate.

Length 14.0 mm; width 5.3 mm.

Ovipositor short ‘‘uritiform.’’

Male and larva unknown.

Type Series. Holotype female (National Museum of Natural History), R. PANAMA: Panamá Prov., Cerro Campana , 800 m, 29 IV 1970, H. P. Stockwell.

Etymology. The species name was chosen due to its similar appearance to the tenebrionid genus Strongylium .
