Type-species: Stenamma westwoodii Westwood HNS , 1840.
Worker and queen. Head slightly longer than broad; antennae 12 segmented, scape not reaching as far as occiput; funicular segments 2-10 not longer than broad; palp formula 4:3; frontal ridges narrowly set about a third head width; clypeus bicarinate; eyes conspicuously small. Anterior peduncle conspicuously elongate.
Male. Antennae 13 segmented, scape about as long as three or four following segments which are all elongate. Eyes enlarged and set anterior to midline. Mesoscutum with Y shaped notauli. Propodeum armed with two short but distinct teeth. Forewings with one cubital and one discoidal cell. The taxonomy of some European species has been investigated by Kutter (1974).
This genus includes about 50 species distributed through the Neotropic, Nearctic and Palaeactic regions with several species in S. Europe. Only one occurs in North and Central Europe.
