Diagnosis. Head dichoptic; male usually without proclinate orbital setae, female with 2 proclinate orbital setae; parafacial with sparse, fine, short, black hairs, sometimes mixed with short whitish hairs; arista short plumose; 2 presutural and 3 postsutural dorsocentral setae; costa haired above and below; mid tibia with 2 anterodorsal setae in male, 3 in female; hind tibia with 3 preapical dorsal setae; male claws and pulvilli longer than 5th tarsomere; abdominal syntergite 1+2 without median discal setae, 3rd to 5th tergites each with a pair of median discal setae; male 5th abdominal sternite with posterior lobe sharply pointed at posero-interior corner.
Redescription. Body length: 5.5–8.0 mm.
Male. Terminalia: Sixth tergite entire, broadly concave on anterior margin, without hairs; surstylus very narrow, narrowed to apex, with several short hairs; cerci in dorsal view broad along basal portion, narrowed at basal 1/3 and tapering to apex, with a distinct mid-dorsal suture along basal 2/3, narrowly separated along apical 1/3, in lateral view weakly concave near middle; pregonite flat; postgonite long, extending beyond apex of epiphallus; epiphallus slightly shorter than basiphallus; dorsal sclerite of distiphallus weakly produced dorsally on distal portion, distal membranous portion about 1.5 times as long as basal sclerotized portion. Female. Terminalia: Sixth tergite narrowly separated into hemitergites mid-dorsally, with a row of setae on posterior margin; 6th sternite with short hairs on posterior portion; 7th tergite separated into hemitergites, with or without setae on median portion; 7th sternite slightly shorter than 6th, with several short hairs on posterior portion; 8th hemitergite very short and small, fused with hypoproct on median portion; 8th sternite longer than 7th sternite.
Description of first instar larva. Body length 0.6–0.7 mm; cephaloskeleton rather broad on anterior 1/3, dorsal margin slightly convex on anterior 1/2 to 3/5; 2nd thoracic segment with 3–4 anterodorsal rows of fine spinules; 2nd to 7th abdominal segments with posterodorsal rows of fine spinules, 7th segment with several fine spinules on posterodorsal margin.

Distribution. Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu).
Remarks. In the original description, Shima (1988) mentioned that the hairs on the body are black in this species, but in reality several short whitish hairs are sometimes mixed with black hairs on the upper portion of the parafacial. This is a rather variable species in the color of the palpus, the male sometimes with 1 or 2 proclinate orbital setae and the color of the parafacial. Some male specimens from Tokyo have 1–2 proclinate orbital setae, differing in this feature from those from other localities, but no other differences have been found among them.
