Diagnosis: The large size, dorsal habitus ( Figs. 35c–e View FIGURE 35 ), free lobe of abdominal tergite VIII ( Figs. 36g View FIGURE 36 , 37c View FIGURE 37 ), and male genitalia serve to distinguish M. robusta . Females can be separated by combination of size, prothoracic lobe ( Fig. 36a View FIGURE 36 ), and the metaxyphus ( Fig. 36b View FIGURE 36 ). The rounded vertex and smaller size serve to separate the species from M. major .

Size: ( Table 12). Macropterous form: 3.52–4.09. Brachypterous form unknown.

Derivation of specific epithet: From the Latin robust, meaning strong, referring apparently to the large size of this species.

Notes on type material: Hale’s types ( Figs. 35a–c View FIGURE 35 ) are deposited in SAMA; holotype (♂) and allotype (♀) on point card ( Fig. 35c View FIGURE 35 ). Label data: “ Adelaide ; H. M. Hale ”; smaller handwritten label below with the word “TYPE”. Large handwritten label with: “ Micronecta robusta Hale , South Australia ”. “Type” handwritten in red across right side of label. The types were examined .

Description: Based on macropterous form. Measurements. Length: male 3.52–3.86; female 3.70–4.09; Width: male 1.74–2.13; female 1.85–2.16; Width of head: male 1.36–1.54; female 1.37–1.63; Synthlipsis: male 0.62–0.73; female 0.63–0.77; Width of eye: male 0.33–0.43; female 0.35–0.45; Width of pronotum: male 1.29–1.45; female 1.40–1.52; Length of pronotum: male 0.33–0.49; female 0.37–0.53.

Color: Ground color light to dark brown ( Figs. 35c–e View FIGURE 35 ). Head brown, eyes silvery-black. Vertex with slight infuscation. Frons, clypeus, and genae unicolorous. Labium dark-brown to black. Antennae pale brown. Pronotum dark brown, unicolorous, with narrow pale apical band spanning width. Scutellum light brown, pruinose medioapically. Clavi each with basal broad, pale diagonal area well-developed, medial and apical portions same ground color as rest of hemelytra. Corium light brown, patterning faintly effaced or with four darker longitudinal lines prominent in medial portion. Prenodal embolar area long, infuscated in medial portion, post-nodal embolar area developed, long, infuscation prominent apically. Left membrane of both sexes hyaline. Venter of both sexes pale to light brown. Natatorial setae of metatarsus darker brown.

Structural characteristics: Ratio of body length/width: males 1.85; females 1.88. Width of head greater than pronotal width, synthlipsis 1.7 times as wide as posterior width of eye. Ocular index: males 1.85; females 1.74. General facies of head (vertex, frons, and labium) proportionate. Third antennal segment densely pilose, long, ovate, apex broadly rounded, segments one and two very short. Pronotum robust, convex, widest at middle with lateral margins slightly tapered and squared, about three times as wide as long (W/L: males 1.33/0.43; females 1.45/0.47). Prothoracic lobe short, broad, with lower and posterior margins rounded ( Fig. 36a View FIGURE 36 ). Hemelytral microsculpturing consisting of short, dense meshes distributed over entire surface. Short setae uniformly distributed over entire hemelytral surface. Metathoracic wings well-developed, reaching to apex of hemelytra. Lateral spines on abdominal segments IV–VIII: IV: one stout, short spine, two thin, long setae; V: two stout, short setae, one long, stout seta, one long, thin seta; VI: two stout, short setae, one long, stout seta, one long, thin seta; VII: one short, stout spine, two long, thin spines, two long, stout setae; VIII: eight stout, short spines, three long, thin setae. Metaxyphus of both sexes broad, short and triangular, with apex rounded ( Figs. 36b View FIGURE 36 , 37a View FIGURE 37 ).

Male foreleg ( Fig. 36c View FIGURE 36 ): femur with two short, stout spines in basal third near ventral surface. Tibia with one short spine in medio-ventral portion. Pala with 2 setae dorsally; 12 setae in upper palar row and 13–15 setae in lower palar row, lower row setae more pronounced than those of dorsal row. Apex of pala with a shorter thickened seta. Palar claw ( Fig. 36d View FIGURE 36 ) broad, apex broadly rounded. Female foreleg with same general setal arrangement as male. Mesotarsal claws equaling about one-half the length of the mesotarsus.

Lateral lobes of abdominal tergum IV broad, asymmetric, and rounded apically. Right lobe longer, with 10 long setae, left lobe with, 10 long evenly spaced, apically placed setae. Prestrigilar flap of tergal segment V as in Figure 36e View FIGURE 36 . Strigil well-developed, shorter, nearly ovate, with few combs. Median lobe of sternite VII ( Figs. 36f View FIGURE 36 , 37b View FIGURE 37 ) broad basally, with numerous scattered setae and two to four longer setae, apex long, produced, with tip rounded. Free lobe of tergite VIII ( Figs. 36g View FIGURE 36 , 37c View FIGURE 37 ) broad, outer angle rounded and inner angle comparatively short. Setae of varying lengths placed over entire apical portion and numbering about 31. Pars stridens processus cleaner ridges of tergite VIII not examined. Male left paramere ( Figs. 37d–g View FIGURE 37 ) long, broad, and parallel-sided, apex tapered with hook-like process distally, apical scales present in inner portion before hooked area. Base broad, upper portion reaching nearly to middle of paramere shaft, lower portion of base short and rounded ( Figs. 37d–g View FIGURE 37 ). Right paramere ( Figs. 37d–h View FIGURE 37 ) long, convexly curved, and nearly parallel-sided, tip expanded and acuminate ( Figs. 37e–g View FIGURE 37 ). Base long, triangular, and widened, with lower portion subquadrate. Pars stridens processus consisting of about 37 plectral ribs spanning lower portion of paramere base ( Fig. 37h View FIGURE 37 ). Aedeagus broad, as in Figures 37d–g View FIGURE 37 .

Distribution and Habitat: AUSTRALIA: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia. A widespread, primarily lentic species. Also collected from creeks and rivers and taken at lights. Not recorded from Australian Capital Territory during this research.

Discussion: The large size and distinct male genitalia serve to separate this species from all other Australian Micronecta . The hemelytral patterning, consisting of four longutudinal corial stripes, is generally well-developed, though variability in darkness of the pattern has been noted. Chen (1965) noted a dark, interrupted transverse pronotal band in specimens she examined. In most specimens examined in this research, the pronotal band was absent, including specimens with a lighter ground color.
