Diagnosis
Dichotomously or laterally branching plexaurids with thick coenenchyme and presence of butterfly-form sclerites. Axial sheath sclerites never purple. Polyps with few, small rods (emended from Bayer 1961: 168 to include laterally branching forms and species without predominance or exclusive occurrence of butterfly-form sclerites in the coenenchyme).
Type species
Gorgonia dichotoma Esper, 1791 , by subsequent designation ( Kunze 1916: 555).
