Hydroptila fortunata Morton 1893 View in CoL
Material examined. Chouly wadi ( CH 1): 1 ♂ on 16.vii.2017 .
Distribution This species was reported from Spain (Canary Islands) and Portugal. It is a new record for Algeria and for the Maghreb fauna, collected at 916 m a.s.l.
Taxonomical Note. Nybom (1938) declared H. fortunata and H. juba ( Enderlein 1929) [distributed in Spain (including Canary and Balearic Islands) and Portugal, respectively] as synonyms. However, Botosaneanu (2003) and Malicky (1987) argued that they are indeed two distinct species, although morphologically very close.
The genitalia of the collected male are more similar to those of H. fortunata (e.g., Barnard & Ross 2012) than to those of H. juba ( Botosaneanu 2003; Enderlein 1929; Malicky 1981, as H. espada ). The preanal appendages ( Fig. 2A & 2B View FIGURE 2 : a1), the ventral branch of segment X ( Fig. 2B View FIGURE 2 : b1), and the pointed shape of the dorsal branch of segment X in lateral view are similar to the drawings given for H. fortunata by Tobias & Tobias (2008). We also compared the specimen with material of both species (1 ♂ of H. juba from mainland Portugal, leg. Terra, col. M. González, and 1 ♂ of H. fortunata from La Palma , Canary Islands, leg. T. Domingo-Quero, col. C. Zamora-Muñoz).
