Lefroyothrips laurencei sp. n.
( Figs 7–12 View FIGURES 7–12 )
Female macroptera. Body bicolored ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7–12 ), head brown, pronotum yellowish brown, pteronotum brown with yellow laterally; antennal segments I–II dark brown, III yellow, IV–V dark brown with base yellow, VI–VIII dark brown ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 7–12 ); abdominal tergite I completely yellow, II–III brown except a few pale areas, IV–V yellow with median light brown, VI–X dark brown ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7–12 ). All legs yellow. Fore wing yellow with two media and sub-apical brown bands, clavus yellow with brown base ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7–12 ).
Head ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7–12 ) with transverse lines except ocellar area; ocellar setae I present; ocellar setae III long, arising in the middle of ocellar triangle; postocular setae situated in a line, short, V slightly longer; maxillary palps 3- segmented. Pronotum with transverse lines having a few median reticulations, about 40 discal setae present, three pairs of posteromarginal setae, inner pair I the longest; two pairs of posteroangular setae, the inner pair as long as the outer pair ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7–12 ). Mesonotum with median transverse lines and irregularly reticulated laterally; median setae in front of posterior margin; anterior CPS present. Metanotum with reticulate sculpture medially, longitudinal striations laterally; median setae at anterior margin; CPS present ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 7–12 ). Fore wing first vein with 7 basal setae, 2 distal setae; second vein with complete row of setae; clavus with 5 marginal setae and 1 discal seta ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7–12 ). Abdominal tergite I with transverse lines completely, II with a few lines anteriorly, III–VIII with transverse lines on lateral tergites, smooth medially, IX–X smooth completely. Tergite VIII with group of microtrichia anterior to spiracle, posterior margin with complete comb; IX with two pairs of CPS; X with incomplete median split ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 7–12 ); sternite VII only with S1 setae in front of posterior margin.
Measurements (holotype female in microns). Body length 1776. Head, length 123; width across eyes 146. Ocellar setae III length 58. Pronotum, length 139; maximum width 205; posteroangular setae length, inner 60, outer 61. Metanotum median setae length 62. Fore wing length 810. Antennal segments I–VIII length 23, 30, 51, 54, 38, 54, 8, 15.
Male. Unknown.
Specimens examined. Holotype female: CHINA, Yunnan Province, Jianshui County, female from Citrus sinensis , 19.iii.2010 (Xu Shu-juan).
Paratype: 2 females, same data as holotype .
Etymology. The species is in honor of Dr. Laurence A Mound for his excellent work on thrips taxonomy, and for celebrating his ninetieth birthday.
Comments. This new species is similar to fasciatus (Moulton) and pictus (Hood) in having abdominal sternite VII setae S2 arising at posterior margin, but it differs from fasciatus and pictus in having fore wing apex pale, first vein with 2 setae on distal half.
