Type material. Holotype ( Figs 1 View Figures 1–6 , 7 View Figures 7–9 ): male, “ Taiwan, Prov. Ilan, Fu Shan Bot. Garden, LTER site, 700 m, 24°45'13''N, 121°35'39''E, 8–9.IV.1997, leg. L. Peregovits & A. Kun ”, gen. prep. No.: ZSM Arct. 2019-966 (prepared by Volynkin) ( MWM / ZSM). GoogleMaps

Steger ; 1 female, Nantou County, Huisun Forest Area , 500m, 15 km N Puli, 12–13.IV.1997, Csorba & Ronkay leg. (all in MWM / ZSM) .

Diagnosis. The new species is externally very similar to M. costipuncta but differs in the somewhat wider forewing. The male genital capsule of M. hokopo sp. n. can be distinguished from that of M. costipuncta by the somewhat wider dorsal section of the valva and the distally narrower distal saccular process strongly upcurved subbasally whereas the distal saccular process of M. costipuncta is upcurved medially. The phalli of the two species are almost identical and display no diagnostic features. Compared to M. costipuncta , the vesica of the new species is considerably broader, has a longer and broader ventral subbasal diverticulum, a more distally positioned dorsal diverticulum, and a markedly narrower, tubular ventral medial diverticulum (it is conical and apically rounded in M. costipuncta ). Additionally, the cornutus of M. hokopo sp. n. has a slightly convex outer margin whereas it is straight or somewhat concave in M. costipuncta . In the female genitalia of M. hokopo sp. n., the gelatinous anterior section of the corpus bursae is markedly shorter and narrower than in M. costipuncta , and the lateral membranous section of the corpus bursae is narrower and basally constricted.

Description. Adult ( Figs 1, 2 View Figures 1–6 ). Forewing length 17–18 mm in males and 18–19 mm in females. Antenna black and weakly ciliate in both sexes. Sexual dimorphism limited: female slightly larger than male and having somewhat wider forewing. Head and thorax deep orange. Forewing with somewhat convex costal margin, ground colour deep orange. Medial area with round black spot at costa. Hindwing golden orange with slight deep orange suffusion outwardly. Abdomen brown, covered with golden orange hair-like scales.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 7 View Figures 7–9 ). Uncus elongate and slender, laterally flattened, tapered and somewhat down curved distally and apically pointed. Tegumen short, with broad arms 2/3 fused posteriorly. Vinculum ca. twice longer than tegumen, with thin arms anteriorly connected by thin commissure convex inwards. Valva lobular, with broad and apically rounded dorsal section. Saccus basally wide, tapered distally, with robust claw-shaped and apically pointed distal process curved dorsally from base. Juxta weakly sclerotised, heartshaped with broad medial depression posteriorly. Phallus moderately broad, tubular, almost straight medially and distally, with long (ca. 1/3 of phallus length) and apically rounded coecum somewhat curved dorsally. Vesica broad, sack-like, directed dorso-distally, with few diverticula; ventral subbasal diverticulum broad, conical and apically rounded, membranous; dorsal diverticulum semiglobular, positioned medially, membranous; lateral medial diverticulum semiglobular with weak granulation; ventral medial diverticulum tubular, finger-shaped, with weak granulation; distal diverticulum conical with dorsally dilated base, somewhat curved ventrally, with weak granulation, bearing long and robust, blade-like and ventrally directed cornutus apically. Female genitalia ( Fig. 10 View Figures 10–11 ). Papilla analis broad, trapezoid with rounded corners, weakly setose. Two additional narrow lobes presented between papillae anales ventrally. Apophyses long and thin, more or less equal in lengths, anterior one dilated basally. Ostium bursae with membranous margins. Ductus bursae short with sclerotised, dorso-ventrally flattened and posteriorly tapered posterior section, and short and membranous anterior section. Posterior section of corpus bursae broad, more or less tubular, membranous. Anterior section of corpus bursae sack-like, gelatinous with broad semielliptical sclerotised plate anteriorly and broad globular membranous diverticulum laterally. Appendix bursae short, conical, membranous, positioned postero-dorsally and directed posteriorly.

Distribution. Endemic to Taiwan Island. Records of M. costipuncta from Taiwan ( Chang 1989; Wang 1994) belong to M. hokopo sp. n.

Etymology. Hoko-Po (the Tigress Witch) is a character of a Taiwanese fairy tale.
