Pittosporum eriocarpum Royle (1834: 77) View in CoL
Type (lectotype, designated here):— INDIA. N [orth] W [est] India , s.d., Royle s.n. ( K barcode K000356472 [digital photo!]; isolectotypes CAL34314 About CAL , [digital photo!], LE01018489 [digital photo!], LE01018490 [digital photo!]; image of the lectotype is available at http:// apps.kew.org/herbcat/detailsQuery.do?imageId=145642&pageCode=1&presentPage=1&queryId=1&sessionId= E7A08333A29671 1C60CE7B581FAF9E26 &barcode= K00035647 ) .
Notes:— Royle (1834) described Pittosporum eriocarpum based on the gatherings from upper hills of Sansadhara (Sahastradhara) and Mussooree (Mussoorie) in Northwest India. We traced some specimens at LE, K, CAL and LIV that fit the protologue and can be considered as original material (syntypes). The specimen at K (barcode K 000356472) bears two plant twigs, flowering and fruiting respectively. The upper twig (in fruiting) is designated here as lectotype. The fruiting twig was given priority over flowering twig, since specific epithet ‘ eriocarpum ’ is based on tomentose fruits, an important character to distinguish it from allied taxa. Further the fruiting twig bears mature and well-formed leaves than flowering twig.
While consulting original materials, a specimen (barcode BM 001209135) of P. eriocarpum from India was traced out at BM, but it is not a part of original collections since the annotations present on the sheet are not from Royle and there is no mention about the type locality.
Additional material examined (syntypes):— INDIA. Northwest India, Mussorrie (Mussoorie), s.d., Royle s.n. ( LIV 1952.121.2130/1 [digital photo!], LIV 1952.121.2130/2 [digital photo!]).
