7. Dichorisandra paranaensis Maia, Cervi & Tardivo (2006: 297) View in CoL .
Type:— BRAZIL. Paraná: Paranaguá, Ilha do Mel, Brasília , trilha do morro da Pedra da Baleia , 25 September 2004, D. Corrêa da Maia 06 (holotype: UPCB n.v.; Isotype: MBM n.v.) .
= Dichorisandra gaudichaudiana Kunth var. burchellii Clarke (1881: 279) View in CoL . syn. nov.
Type:— BRAZIL. s.d., Burchell 3361. Catalogus Geographicus Plantarum Brasiliae Tropicae (Lectotype [here designated]: K 000363218!, photo available at http://plants.jstor.org/stable/pdf/10.5555/al.ap.specimen.k000363218).
Distribution: — Maia et al. (2006) reported that this species occurs only in the state of Paraná. However, Aona (2008) extended its distribution and reports it occurrence from Bahia to Santa Catarina, with a predominance in the state of São Paulo.
Habitat:—Seasonal Semideciduous Forest and Dense Ombrophilous Forest.
Notes:— Maia et al. (2006) commented that D. paranaensis resembles D. thyrsiflora in the erect habit of the plant, varying leaf blade size, and obovate petals that are white at the base and purple on the upper two thirds. D. paranaensis , however, differs from this species by having five stamens (vs. six stamens), anther dehiscence by longitudinal slits (vs. dehiscence by pores), and a densely pilose ovary (vs. ovary with sparse trichomes).
Clarke described D. gaudichaudiana var. burchellii as having the characteristics “ foliis in utraque pagina glabris; sepalis breviter pubescentibus ”. Clarke cited two collections (syntypes, according to Art. 9.5), one by John William Burchell with the number 3361 (1781–1863) and another by Padre Leandro di Sacramento without a collection number (1778–1829), with only poor information on the label. At P, the material collected by Sacramento is dated as 1819, with no other numbers. On the label, there is an annotation by Clarke that reads “ Dichorisandra Burchellii C.B. Clarke (= Burchell num. 3361)”. He obviously later changed his mind and published his new taxon as a variety of D. gaudichaudiana . According to Art. 9.12 of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012), and since the specimen Burchell 3361 is clearly annotated in Clarke’s handwriting, it is here chosen for the lectotype of D. gaudichaudiana var. burchellii . This material has flowers with five stamens, anthers with introrse longitudinal slits that are functionally poricidal, and a pilose ovary, which confirms that this name is a synonym of D. paranaensis .
