Annual, succulent plants. Leaves alternate, cylindrical. Flowers solitary, bisexual, subtended by 2 navicular bracteoles; perianth lobes 3-5, unequal, indurated in fruit and united in the lower part into an ampullaceous structure; stamens (4-)5; anthers appendiculate; staminodes absent; stigmas 2, semi-infundibular, often denticulate. Pericarp succulent; seed vertical. About ll spp., Mediterranean Europe to C Asia.
