Subgenus Sporadiana Zeuner, 1941 View in CoL
Sporadiana Zeuner, 1941 : 39. Type species: Platycleis brevipes Uvarov, 1934 (not P. sporadarum as mentioned in Otte, 1997)
(now synonym of P. sporadarum ).
Remarks. P. sporadarum was included in the subgenus Parnassiana by Harz (1969) and later transferred to Tessellana by Ingrisch and PavicÂevic (1985). Tessellana may be closely related to Sporadiana , but we believe that P. sporadarum is su ciently diOEerent morphologically (with long and suddenly curved and then straight ovipositor, large and gibbous VI sternite of female, wide processes of male anal tergite, short and apically wide tegmina) to justify a separate subgenus. P. brevipes (Uvarov, 1934) is not diOEerent from P. sporadarum . Also the record of Platycleis sporadarum by TazeguÈl (1993) from Izmir, AliagÏa (type locality of P. brevipes ) is further evidence that these two species are not diOEerent.
Platycleis (Sporadiana) sporadarum Werner, 1933

Platycleis sporadarum Werner, 1933: 192 View in CoL .
HOLOTYPE,: Greece, Chios ( NMW) (examined).

Syn.: Metrioptera brevipes Uvarov, 1934 syn. n. (type, Turkey, IÇzmir, AliagÏa
( BMNH).
Remarks. Werner (1933) did not mention any type in the original description. of
However, in NMW there are 1 from Chios (label: Chios b. Volissos, V. Oertzen leg., 16875), labelled as typus, and 1 from Mytilini (label: Lesbos, Olymp, Br. Wt.
leg.), labelled as allotypus (pre®x allo added by hand). In addition, there are 1,
1 from Mytilini, collected by Werner (label: Graecia, Mytilini, 27 July 1932, Werner leg.) without any type labels. Because in the description the species is mentioned in by combination with Brunner von Wattenwyl’ s name (Br., in coll.), we believe that the type labellings are correct and 1, 1 from Mytilini by Werner should be considered as paratypes.
Distribution. Greece and western Turkey.
Previous records for Turkey. IÇZMIÇR: AliagÏa, 1 (Uvarov, 1934) (not examined)
(photographs of holotype of Metrioptera brevipes in Naskrecki and Otte, 1999a);
IÇZMIÇR: AliagÏa, 25 July 1991, 2, 5; 6 July 1992, 2, 5; 30 July 1992, 3, 6;

Subgenus Squamiana Zeuner, 1941
Squamiana Zeuner, 1941: 34 View in CoL .
Type species: Platycleis squamiptera Uvarov, 1912 .
Description: Zeuner (1941), Ramme (1951).
Key to species (male)
(excluding P. weidneri ) 1 Pronotum slightly raised in prozona, strongly depressed in metazona, median carina distinct in metazone, 6.5 mm or shorter............. 2 ± Pronotum raised in whole length, median carina relatively weak in metazona, 8 mm
or longer................... kurmana 14
at of by 2 Tegmina shorter than pronotum............... 3
± Tegmina longer than pronotum.......... melendisensis sp. n.
3 Tegmina 4.4±5.2 mm in both sexes; ovipositor 10±11 mm; tooth of cerci placed distally to middle and cerci narrowed after tooth towards apex (®gure 65).... sinuata
± Tegmina 3.4 mm or shorter in both sexes; ovipositor 8.7 mm or shorter; tooth of cerci placed in basal 1/4 and not distinctly narrowed toward apex (®gure 64). salmani sp. n.
Naskrecki and U È nal (1995) record a Platycleis (Squamiana) sp. from Hatay. These specimens may belong to P. sinuata or to a new species.
Remarks. Zeuner (1941) mentioned that the subgenus Platycleis would be the closest relative of Squamiana . The main similarity between these two subgenera is the structure of the ovipositor. Squamiana diOEers from subgenus Platycleis by micropterous tegmina, basal arms of titillators with spines and female subgenital plate without median sulcus and incision at hind margin. Titillators with spines on basal arms are also shared with Sepiana , Montana , Incertana , Sporadiana and Tessellana . The female subgenital plate without a distinct median sulcus and the incision at hind margin is also a feature of Montana and Incertana . However, Squamiana diOEers from all these subgenera by the shape of the ovipositor.
Apart from pronotum, wing, female subgenital plate and ovipositor, four species included in the subgenus (included also the type species P. squamiptera, CË õplak, unpublished data) share some other similarities, which de®ne the subgenus well: widely raised female VI and VII sternite and the titillators. Especially, the shape of the titillator is nearly the same for all species. Of the six species in the subgenus, P. sinuata , P. salmani , P. melendisensis and possibly P. weidneri are closely related ( sinuata group).
