Type Locality: "La Salada, 40 miles [64 km] south of Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico." .
Vernacular Names: Tropical Ground Squirrel.

Distribution: E Jalisco, Michoacan, and N Guerrero ( WC Mexico).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Notocitellus (A. H. Howell, 1938) or Otospermophilus ( Hall, 1981:399); but see also Birney and Genoways (1973) who suggested it is closer to subgenus Ictidomys . Molecular sequence data indicate that adocetus and annulatus are sister species ( Harrison et al., 2003), and basal to all other spermophiline ground squirrels, except Ammospermophilus .
