Colocistis Krombein 1942(April) :65. Type species: Colocistis pilosa Krombein 1942:66 . Original designation.*

Female description

Body length 5–12 mm. Head ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ): mandible broadest subapically, with two distinct apical teeth, inner margin with large, obtuse tooth at broadest point, obtuse tooth obscured by scutate bristles, inner margin below tooth with three small teeth, outer carina obsolescent, ventral carina distinct, sharp; maxillary palp 5segmented; occipital carina welldeveloped, rectangulate ventrolaterally, forming straight line ventrally, often subtended by secondary carina ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ); vertex with submedial impressions, lateral setose groove represented by row of large punctures. Mesosoma: propleural ventral margin strongly elevated, with sharp, transverse carina; metasternum elevated, Yshaped; mid and hindtrochanters ventrally angulate; hindcoxa with longitudinal carina on inner margin ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ); hindtibial spur slightly curved and acute apically. Metasoma: sternum I with transverse subbasal carina welldeveloped and protruding, subtended by medial pit, and with two foveae basad ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ); tergum I with welldeveloped lateral ridge.

Distribution

USA: California: Imperial, Inyo, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties; Arizona: Cochise and Pima Counties; Colorado: Otero County; Texas: Presidio and Jeff Davis Counties; MEXICO: Chihuahua; 29 specimens were examined.

Discussion This genus of 10 species exhibits a number of unique traits in the female, including the ventrally angulate occipital carina, the ventrally angulate mid and hindtrochanters, hindcoxal carina on the inner margin and a dorsobasal hindcoxal carina. Because a number of these features are shared with males of Colocistis and the distributions of the two genera coincide, Aglyptacros is here made the junior synonym of Colocistis . Although both names were published in 1942 Colocistis was published seven months earlier by Krombein.
