Range: —Andes of Peru south to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, SC, TA), Argentina, and Chile; Kerguelen, Tristan da Cunha; alpine regions of tropical and southern Africa; Madagascar, Réunion, Mauritius.
Ecology: —Common; terrestrial in humid high-elevation grasslands and Polylepis forests; 2500–5000 m.
Notes: — Phlegmariurus saururus is fairly easy to recognize due to its densely aggregated aerial shoots, resulting in narrow and etiolated shoot bases.
