3.10.1. Trichinella papuae in Asia and Oceania
Since the first description of T. papuae in 1999, it has been reported in wild pigs from Australia (Cuttell et al., 2012), as well as in saltwater crocodiles in Papua New Guinea ( Pozio et al., 2004c, 2005a) ( Table 29). In Papua New Guinea, antibodies to Trichinella spp . have been reported in humans ( Owen et al., 2001), but clinical and genotyped cases have not been documented. Human infections linked to game meat consumption have occurred in Cambodia and Thailand despite there being no genotyped reports of T. papuae in wildlife from these countries ( Table 30) (Caron et al., 2020; Khumjui et al., 2008; Kusolsuk et al., 2010). Trichinella papuae was misidentified as T. spiralis in a Thai patient (returned from Malaysia) in 2005 with a history of consuming wild boar
10
meat (Chotmongkol et al., 2005), and was later correctly identified using PCR as T. papuae , which suggests circulation of T. papuae in wild boars in Malaysia ( Intapan et al., 2011).
