Genus Taphura Stål, 1862a View in CoL View at ENA
Cicada (Taphura) Stål 1862a: 20 View in CoL .
Type species. Cicada misella Stål 1854: 243 View in CoL ( Brazil, Minas Gerais).
REMARKS. The genus was revised recently with a number of new species added to the genus including one from Peru ( Sanborn 2017a). Species are characterized by their relatively small size (body length 6–18 mm) and elaborate male genitalia displayed by the majority of species that permit species to be diagnosed easily.
DISTRIBUTION. The genus is found over much of South America including references to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963c; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2011a; 2013; 2016b; 2017a; 2018b; 2019b; 2020a; Sanborn & Heath 2014).
