Type species. Cicada hilaris Germar 1834: 69 View in CoL . (Australia?)
REMARKS. Species of the genus are characterized by a head about as wide as the mesonotum, eyes scarcely projecting beyond anterior pronotal angle, radial crossvein oriented vertically to radius anterior 2, obliquely oriented radius posterior vein and radiomedial crossvein, large semicircular male opercula, and triangular or small, curved timbal covers. Pogue (1996) listed ten undetermined species as occurring in Peru.
DISTRIBUTION. Species of the genus have been reported from Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the Virgin Islands ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2011a; 2013; 2014a; 2018b; 2019b; Sanborn & Maes 2012; Maes et al. 2012; Sanborn & Heath 2014).
