Dorisiana Metcalf 1952 View in CoL nom. nov. pro Dorisia Delétang, 1919 View in CoL nec Dorisia Möschler, 1883: 351 View in CoL .

Type species. Cicada semilata Walker 1850: 122 View in CoL . (St. Lucia, Antilles and Cayenne, French Guiana)

REMARKS. The problems of defining characteristics of the genus began when it was introduced as part of a taxonomic key ( Delétang 1919) and neither Metcalf (1952) when he provided a replacement name nor Boulard & Martinelli (1996) when they separated Dorisana and Guyalna by two characters in a key when Guyalna Boulard & Martinelli, 1996 was introduced provided a full description of the genus. Multiple species have been assigned to incorrect genera or species were reassigned to different genera only to be reassigned again in the future due to the lack of a full generic description. A cruciform elevation notched in the form of a more or less open semicircle was the only structure used by Delétang (1919) to distinguish his genus while Boulard & Marinelli (1996) used a tapered, triangular timbal cover as characteristic of Dorisiana . Species of Dorisiana are most similar to Guyalna but can be distinguished by a head not as wide or wider than mesonotum, eyes not extending beyond lateral edges of pronotum, triangular timbal covers, ventral timbal cover margin being angled dorsally and not parallel to long body axis, and lateral uncus lobes not extending to same length as in the species of Guyalna ( Sanborn 2016a) . Pogue (1996) listed one undetermined species as occurring in Peru.

DISTRIBUTION. The genus has been reported over much of the New World with examples being recorded from the Antilles, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Boulard & Martinelli 2011; Sanborn 2011a, b; 2013; 2014a; 2016b; 2018b; 2019b; Sanborn & Heath 2014).
