( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 )

TYPE MATERIAL. Holotype. “La Merced, / Chanchamayo / PERU / coll. E. G. Smyth // LACM ENT 403898 About LACM ” male ( LACM).

REMARKS. This is a small species with linear markings of the head, thorax, postclypeus, and ventral abdomen. It is most similar to H. polygramma n. sp. but differs in the shape of the basal pygofer lobe appendage.

ETYMOLOGY. The name is a combination of the province of the type locality (chanchamayo -) and - ensis (L., suffix denoting place, locality).

DESCRIPTION. Ground color of head and thorax tawny marked with piceous and castaneous, may be primarily green when fresh due to intensity and position of tawny in different specimens, abdomen tawny and castaneous.

Head. Head slightly wider than mesonotum, dorsal head tawny with piceous surrounding lateral and posterior lateral ocelli extending to posterior head through posterior cranial depression and anterior median ocellus, frons castaneous, eye margined with piceous, piceous posterior to eye, covered with short silvery pile dorsally, longer piceous pile radiating from dorsal head, long silvery pile posterior to eye. Ocelli ochraceous, eyes castaneous. Ventral head ground color, gena with transverse castaneous fascia extending from ventral to eye to postclypeus, lorum castaneous except anteromedial corner. Postclypeus centrally sulcate with eleven transverse ridges, ground color ventrally, castaneous posterior to transverse ridges dorsally. Anteclypeus castaneous with ground color carina and anterior margin. Ventral head with short silvery pile, long piceous pile radiating from lorum, gena, and postclypeus, anteclypeus radiating long silvery pile. Mentum ground color, labium ground color with piceous near tip surrounded proximally and distally with castaneous. Rostrum reaching to anterior of hind coxae. Proximal and distal scape and proximal pedicel ground color, remaining antennal segments castaneous.

Thorax. Dorsal thorax tawny marked with castaneous and piceous. Prothorax and pronotal collar ground color with piceous fascia in paramedian fissure and posterior half of lateral fissure that recurves anteriorly to join with mark in posterior paramedian fissure, castaneous anterior to posterior half of paramedian fissure on disk, castaneous spot on central disk between fissures, small transverse fascia on dorsal midline in posterior ambient fissure, sparse silvery pile on dorsal surface, pronotum radiating long piceous pile. Pronotal collar ground color with castaneous margin on lateral angle of pronotal collar, with short silvery pile and radiating long piceous pile. Mesothorax ground color, piceous posterior margin and anteromedial margin of submedian sigillae, castaneous along lateral and middle of medial margins of submedian sigillae, posterior curve of lateral sigilla with a piceous U-shaped mark, anterior lateral sigilla and anterolateral corner of mesonotum castaneous, scutal depressions piceous. Sparse golden pile on dorsum, longer and denser in wing groove, on posterior margin and between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, long piceous pile radiating from dorsum. Metanotum ground color with dark castaneous mark anterolaterally, radiating golden pile on posterior margin. Ventral thoracic segments ground color except piceous basisternum 2 and castaneous trochantin 3, covered with silvery pile and radiating long piceous pile.

Wings. Fore wing and wings hyaline with eight and six apical cells respectively. Venation ground color at base becoming darker distally except piceous on base and distal half of anal vein 2 + 3, pterostigma present, light longitudinal infuscation fore wing apical cells extending onto wing marginal area, wing margin infuscated, piceous spot on base, basal membrane of fore wing grayish. Hind wing venation coloration similar to fore wing except straight castaneous anal vein 3, anal vein 3 less than half the length of anal vein 2. Anal cell 3, anal cell 2 along anal vein 3 and along anal vein 2, and anal cell 1 along anal vein 2 grayish, infuscation along gray in anal cell 2 and distal marginal area of hind wing.

Legs. Legs ground color except castaneous lateral coxae, distal trochanters, all but distal femora, distal tibiae, distal pretarsi, and pretarsal claws. Fore femora with proximal spine straight, longest, exhibiting intermediate angle, secondary spine perpendicular at base and curving distally, tertiary spine slightly smaller and angled away from secondary spine, apical spine absent, all spines castaneous with darker tips. Tibial spurs and combs castaneous. Legs with short silvery and long golden pile. Meracanthus broadly triangular, pointed, ground color with castaneous base, extending posteriorly beyond anteromedial opercular margin.

Opercula. Male operculum ground color, castaneous anterolaterally, ochraceous rectangular lateral extension from base, piceous lateral margin posterior to the extension, lateral margin angled slightly mediad, smoothly curved to sinuate posterior margin, covered with short silvery pile radiating long golden pile, lateral margin extending ventrally at right angle from base, bent again at approximate right angle to form lateral margin parallel to long body axis, medial margins roughly semicircular, not meeting medially extending to middle of hind coxa, anteromedial margin transverse to lateral meracanthus where it curves anteriorly to base, not covering tympanum anteromedially or posteriorly, reaching to anterior of sternite II only posteromedially.

Abdomen. Abdominal tergites castaneous dorsally, greenish-tawny laterally, tergite 8 almost completely castaneous, auditory capsule castaneous, tergites covered with short and long golden pile. Timbal cover absent, timbal completely exposed with eight long ribs and seven intercalary ribs. Male sternites ground color with castaneous midline, amount of castaneous widening towards posterior of sternites, amount of castaneous increasing in posterior segments so that sternite VII is castaneous with ground color anterolateral corners, castaneous forms central fascia on ventral abdomen, castaneous spot on posterolateral sternite II, epipleurites castaneous with ground color medial margin, sternite VIII castaneous with darker anterolateral corners, sternite VIII expanding from base, angled mediad to transverse terminus, open U-shape when viewed from the posterior, short silvery pile on ventral segments, long golden pile radiating from sternites VII and VIII.

Genitalia. Male pygofer greenish-tawny with castaneous ventral margin and dorsal beak, pygofer covered with short golden pile and radiating long golden pile. Dorsal beak narrow, extending beyond ochraceous anal styles. Pygofer basal lobe angled laterad at base, curving mediad extended with flattened distal terminus angled mediad with curved medial margin, radiating long, dense golden pile. Basal lobe appendage with large base, roughly rectangular with curved medial margin, flattened extension from posteroventral corner of base, curving ventrally, crossing over midline and terminating in two points. Upper pygofer lobes flattened, short, curved mediad with rounded terminus. Claspers forming knob-like extension posterior to anal tube, separated by V-shaved notch when viewed from above, meeting medially at base, forming an arched notch surrounding aedeagus when viewed from posterior, radiating dense, long golden pile. Aedeagus tubular, dark castaneous.

Female is unknown.

MEASUREMENTS (MM). N = one male. Length of body: 16.45; length of fore wing: 20.60; width of fore wing: 7.10; length of head: 2.90; width of head including eyes: 5.65; width of pronotum including suprahumeral plates: 6.70; width of mesonotum: 5.60.

DIAGNOSIS. Herrera chanchamayoensis n. sp. is another of the Herrera species that possess prothoracic and mesothoracic markings. It can be distinguished from H. cephalodigramma n. sp. by the two angled piceous marks on the head of that species. Similarly, H. lugubrina compostelensis , H. humilistrata , and H. signifera have a primarily piceous head while H. moyabambaensis n. sp. lacks any head marking. The reduced prothoracic and mesothoracic marking of H. freiae and H. quinimaculata distinguish these species from this new species. The darker midline stripe on the ventral abdomen in this new species is absent in H. guianaensis and H. polygramma n. sp., although some specimens of H. polygramma n. sp. have markings on the midline of some posterior abdominal sternites but also differ in the transverse orientation of the posterior timbal cavity. Finally, H. sigillata can be distinguished by prothoracic markings in the paramedian fissures connecting across the dorsal midline, the shapes and angles of the fore femora spines, piceous ventral abdominal midline stripe, and the lack of castaneous on the anterolateral operculum distinguish it from this new species.

DISTRIBUTION. The species is known only from the holotype collected in Chachomayo Province, Peru.
