REMARKS. This is a small species with linear markings of the head, thorax, postclypeus, and ventral abdomen. It is most similar to H. signifera Sanborn, 2019b and H. turbida Jacobi, 1907 and very similar to H. chanchamayoensis n. sp. but differs in the shape of the basal pygofer lobe appendage.

ETYMOLOGY. The name is a combination of polys - (L., polys, many) and - gramma (Gr., gramme, line, stroke of the pen) in reference to the numerous linear markings on the body.

DESCRIPTION. Ground color of head and thorax greenish-tawny marked with piceous and castaneous, may be primarily green when fresh due to intensity and position of tawny in different specimens, abdomen tawny and castaneous.

Head. Head slightly wider than mesonotum, dorsal head greenish-tawny with piceous surrounding all but anterolateral lateral ocelli and anterior median ocellus, and short longitudinal mark anterolateral to lateral ocelli on vertex, castaneous fascia extending across supra-antennal plate from posteromedial corner to above antenna, covered with short silvery pile dorsally, longer piceous pile radiating from dorsal head, long silvery pile posterior to eye. Ocelli rosaceous, ochraceous in some paratypes, eyes ochraceous, castaneous in some paratypes. Ventral head ground color except piceous mark on posteromedial of lorum along margin of anteclypeus. Postclypeus centrally sulcate with ten transverse ridges, ground color laterally, lighter along midline separated from lateral regions by longitudinal castaneous fasciae on medial transverse ridges, castaneous mark on dorsal surface between terminus of piceous fascia and frontoclypeal suture in some paratypes.Anteclypeus ground color with piceous mark on posterior carina bifurcating to parallel anterior carina. Ventral head with short silvery pile, long piceous pile radiating from lorum, gena, and postclypeus, anteclypeus radiating long silvery pile, white pubescence on lateral postclypeus and medial gena. Mentum ground color with castaneous lateral marks, labium castaneous with piceous tip. Rostrum reaching to anterior of hind coxae. Proximal and distal scape and proximal pedicel ground color, remaining antennal segments piceous.

Thorax. Dorsal thorax greenish-tawny marked with castaneous and piceous. Prothorax and pronotal collar ground color with piceous fascia in paramedian fissure and posterior half of lateral fissure, mark in lateral fissure recurving anteriorly in some paratypes, small transverse piceous mark in posterior ambient fissure across midline, sparse silvery pile on dorsal surface, pronotum radiating long piceous pile. Mesothorax ground color, piceous medial margin of submedian sigillae extending onto posterior parapsidal suture, castaneous along lateral sigillae darkening on posterior curve, posterior curve with a piceous spot or V-shaped mark in some paratypes, scutal depressions piceous, posterolateral corner of mesonotum piceous in some paratypes. Sparse golden pile on dorsum, longer and denser in wing groove, on posterior margin and between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, long piceous pile radiating from dorsum. Metanotum ground color with dark castaneous mark anterior margin, radiating golden pile on posterior margin. Ventral thoracic segments ground color covered with silvery pile and radiating long piceous pile.

Wings. Fore wing and wings hyaline with eight and six apical cells respectively. Venation ground color at base becoming darker distally except piceous on base and distal half of anal vein 2 + 3, pterostigma present, light longitudinal infuscation fore wing apical cells extending onto wing marginal area, wing margin infuscated, piceous spot on base, basal membrane of fore wing grayish. Hind wing venation coloration similar to fore wing except piceous anal vein 3. Anal cell 3, anal cell 2 along anal vein 3 and along anal vein 2 to distal curve, and anal cell 1 along anal vein 2 to distal curve grayish, infuscation along gray in anal cell 2 and distal marginal area of hind wing.

Legs. Legs ground color, castaneous fasciae on femora, distal tibiae and distal pretarsi castaneous, pretarsal claws ground color at base with castaneous tips. Fore femora with proximal spine straight, longest, least angled, secondary spine perpendicular at base and curving distally, tertiary spine slightly smaller and parallel to secondary spine, and very small triangular apical spine, all spines castaneous with darker tips. Tibial spurs and combs castaneous with darker tips. Legs with long golden pile, piceous pile on middle and hind tibiae and all tarsi in holotype, absent in some paratypes. Meracanthus broadly triangular, pointed and curving slightly mediad, ground color with piceous base, extending posteriorly beyond anteromedial opercular margin. Female meracanthus broadly triangular with curved lateral margin, pointed, extending beyond posterior margin of operculum, castaneous with ground color margins.

Opercula. Male operculum ground color with piceous base, piceous expanding medially and laterally on base, lateral margin castaneous posterior to ventral curve, covered with short silvery pile radiating long golden pile, lateral margin extending ventrally at right angle from base, bent again at approximate right angle to form lateral margin parallel to long body axis, angled slightly mediad posterior to base, posterolateral and posterior margin roughly semi-circular, medial margin curved, not meeting medially, anteromedial margin transverse to lateral meracanthus where it curves anteriorly to base, not covering tympanum anterolaterally, reaching to anterior of sternite III. Female operculum ground color with piceous base, middle of lateral operculum bent at approximate right angle and angled mediad, arching to straight posterior margin, medial margin with anteriorly curved terminus reaching medially to medial meracanthus, transverse anteromedial margin before curving to base, not covering tympanal cavity, covered with and radiating long silvery pile.

Abdomen. Abdominal tergites castaneous, tawny posterior margin in tergites 2–7, dorsolateral tergite 3 tawny, greenish in some paratypes, auditory capsule piceous, tergites covered with short golden pile. Timbal cover absent, timbal completely exposed with six long ribs and five intercalary ribs. Male sternite I castaneous, sternites II–VII ground color with posteriorly expanding central castaneous mark, amount of castaneous increasing in posterior segments so that sternite VII is castaneous with ground color anterolateral corners, castaneous forms central fascia on ventral abdomen, epipleurites castaneous with ground color medial margin, sternite VIII castaneous with lighter lateral margin, sternite VIII expanding from base, angled mediad to transverse terminus, open U-shape when viewed from the posterior, short silvery pile on ventral segments, long piceous pile radiating from sternites VII and VIII. Female abdominal segment 9 castaneous, dorsal beak with darker posterior margin, with short golden pile and radiating long golden pile. Dorsal beak curved dorsally, longer than gray and piceous anal styles that radiate golden pile, posterior margin of abdominal segment 9 sinuate. Female sternite I and anterior sternite II ground color, remaining sternites castaneous, epipleurites castaneous, sternites covered with short and long golden pile. Female sternite VII with deeply curved notch almost reaching anterior margin, margin of notch curving to straight posterior margin forming an approximate right angle, lateral posterior margin straight, angled anterolaterally.

Genitalia. Male pygofer castaneous, lighter ventrolateral surface, upper pygofer lobe, and lateral branch of anal tube, distal termini of basal pygofer lobes, anteroventral corner of clasper, tip of dorsal beak and margins of anal styles darker, pygofer covered with short golden pile and radiating long piceous pile. Dorsal beak narrow, extending slightly beyond castaneous anal styles. Pygofer basal lobe extended with flattened distal appendage angled mediad with curved medial margin, thin finger-like extensions diverging from the anteroventral corner, radiating long, dense golden pile. Upper pygofer lobes flattened, short, with rounded terminus. Claspers separated with obtuse angle when viewed from above, meeting medially at base, forming an arched notch surrounding aedeagus when viewed from posterior, radiating dense, long golden pile. Aedeagus tubular with terminal membrane, dark castaneous.

Gonocoxite IX light castaneous. Female gonapophyses VIII and IX dark castaneous, gonapophysis X castaneous with piceous tip extending beyond dorsal beak with radiating golden pile.

DIAGNOSIS. Herrera polygramma n. sp. is one of a number of species of Herrera that possess prothoracic and mesothoracic markings. Herrera cephalodigramma n. sp. can be distinguished by the two angled piceous marks on the head. Herrera lugubrina compostelensis , H. humilistrata , and H. signifera have a primarily piceous head while H. moyabambaensis n. sp. lacks any head marking and the parallel stripes on the ventral postclypeus found in this new species. The prothoracic and mesothoracic markings are reduced to spots in H. quinimaculata . Similarly, the prothoracic marking consists of only a small transverse mark on the midline of the ambient fissure in H. freiae . There is a darkened stripe on the ventral midline of the abdominal sternites in H. chanchamayoensis n. sp. and H. sigillata , any markings are restricted to the posterior abdominal sternites in H. polygramma n. sp. if any are present. Finally, in H. guianaensis the posterior abdominal color is darker, the medial male operculum is larger and oriented transversely towards the midline rather than posteromedially, and the basal pygofer lobe appendage extends to a narrow point from the posteroventral corner rather than the anteroventral corner.

DISTRIBUTION. The species is known only from the type series collected in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru.
