REMARKS. Metcalf (1963a) is the only one to reference D. semilata in Peru. However, he (along with many authors previous to the catalog) considered D. metcalfi (= D. viridis Olivier ) a junior synonym of D. semilata . Jacobi (1907; 1951) referenced Fidicina viridis as the species inhabiting Peru. Metcalf (1963a) then listed Peru as a locality where D. semilata was collected because of the synonymy. Since D. metcalfi and D. semilata represent different taxa ( Sanborn & Heath 2014), D. semilata is removed from the cicada fauna of Peru.

The number of species that were synonymized by Metcalf (1963a) may not all represent the same taxon. The relatively short descriptions in Walker (1850) may mean that some of the synonymized species are in fact valid taxa and further analysis should be performed.

DISTRIBUTION. The species has been reported from an expansive geographic range but this may need to be refined if some of the synonyms are determined to be valid species. Records for the species have been published for Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, St. Lucia, the Antilles, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Dorval et al. 2011; Sanborn 2011a, b; 2013; 2014a; Sanborn & Heath 2014). Previous references to Panama were in error ( Sanborn 2018b).
