REMARKS. This new species is very similar to a group of species that are of similar size and general morphology including C. aratayensis , C. cyrili , C. dicrophryxothrix n. sp., C. dolosa , C. doxiptera , C. ensifera , C. gemella , C. hamata , C. lichiana , C. rumipataensis n. sp., C. socia , C. ventrilloni , and C. viridicata . The bronzing is very light and restricted to the distal half of the fore wing apical cells in this new species.

ETYMOLOGY. The name is a combination of dicro - (Gr. dikros, forked, cloven) and - phryxothrix (Gr., phryxothrix, with bristling hair, making the hair stand on end) in reference to the bifurcated terminus of the basal lobe appendage and the radiating pile on the basal pygofer lobes in the species.

DESCRIPTION. Ground color is green in fresh specimens. Color fades to ochraceous in older specimens. One paratype has a tawny abdomen.

Head. Head not as wide as mesonotum, ground color without markings. Ocelli ochraceous, white or margined with rosaceous in some paratypes. Eyes castaneous, dark ochraceous in some paratypes. Head covered with silvery pile, longer posterior to eye, dense, long, piceous pile between ocelli, extending laterally while decreasing in density to anteromedial eye continuing on anterolateral vertex anterior to eye and terminating posterior to supra-antennal plate, density of piceous pile reduced in some paratypes. Gena ground color covered with long silvery pile, lorum castaneous with ochraceous anterior margin and anteromedial corner, ground color in paratypes, covered with long silvery pile. Postclypeus ground color, centrally sulcate from anterior to posteroventral margin to around apex, with ten transverse ridges, long silvery pile on lateral margin and posterior dorsal surface, long piceous pile radiating from dorsal and ventral surfaces. Anteclypeus ground color with long silvery pile, radiating long piceous pile. Mentum ground color, labium ground color with lateral fascia that is castaneous at base becoming piceous distally, reaching to anterior of hind coxae. Scape and proximal pedicel ochraceous, remaining antennal segments castaneous.

Thorax. Dorsal thorax ground color. Pronotum covered with short golden pile, longer pile radiating from lateral part of pronotal collar. Mesonotum ground color with slightly darkened parapsidal suture, parapsidal suture ground color in paratypes, mottling within submedian and lateral sigillae where muscles attach internally in some paratypes, lighter or darker in various paratypes, with radiating golden pile. Metanotum ground color. Mesonotum covered with short golden pile, long golden pile between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, posterior to anterior arms of cruciform elevation, on lateral and posterior mesothorax, within and radiating from wing groove, and on posterolateral metanotum. Ventral thoracic segments ground color laterally, castaneous medially, castaneous intensity varies in paratypes, covered with long and short silvery pile.

Wings Fore wing and wings hyaline, distal half of apical cells lightly bronzed. Venation ground color becoming darker distally. Basal cell hyaline, clouded at base in some paratypes, pterostigma present, longitudinal lines of infuscation in apical cells, apical cell 1 with a series of tangential lines, and on marginal area of fore wings, basal membrane of fore wing grayish with ground color posterior margin. Hind wing venation ground color becoming darker distally. Anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal veins 2 and 3, anal cell 1 along anal vein 2 grayish, anal cell 3 with ground color posterior margin.

Legs. Legs ochraceous, coxae and femora striped with castaneous, distal trochanter margin castaneous, distal fore and middle tibiae margined with castaneous, pretarsal claws ochraceous at base becoming castaneous with piceous tips. Fore femora proximal spine largest, angled to greatest degree, secondary spine slightly angled with curved tip, tertiary spine upright at base with more strongly curved tip, all spines castaneous with piceous tips, very small piceous apical spine emerging from distal base of tertiary spine. Tibial spurs and combs castaneous with piceous tips. Legs with long silvery pile on coxae, radiating long golden pile on remaining segments. Meracanthus broadly triangular, ground color, reaching middle of medial opercular margin, female meracanthus extending slightly beyond posterior opercular margin.

Opercula. Male operculum ground color covered with long golden pile, long silvery pile at base, lateral margin straight, angled slightly medially, rounded posterolateral and posterior margin, rounded medial margin, not meeting medially, not reaching medial meracanthus, barely covering tympanum reaching to middle of lateral sternite II, sinuous when viewed from the posterior. Female operculum and meracanthus of similar shape and color except lateral and posterior margin straight rather than curved, operculum reaching to posterior of sternite II.

Abdomen. Abdominal tergites ground color, posterior margin darker in holotype, one paratype with tawny tergites another with posterior tergites lightly castaneous, tergites covered with golden pile, long golden pile surrounding timbal cavity and radiating from auditory capsule. Timbal exposed, white with castaneous ribs, seven long ribs and six intercalary ribs. Male sternites ground color with castaneous medial region expanding laterally along posterior margin, sternite VII castaneous except lateral region, sternite VIII castaneous with dark ochraceous posteromedial region expanding posteriorly to margin, sternite VIII dark ochraceous margined with castaneous with transverse posterior margin, castaneous reduced to posterior margin in some paratypes, short golden pile radiating from sternites, epipleurites ground color, castaneous in one paratype, with golden pile. Female tergites and sternites similarly colored to male except female sternites with light castaneous on posterior margin, sternite VII light castaneous on notch margin. Female sternite VII with deep V-shaped medial notch, posterior notch extending as a point beyond arching posterolateral margin. Female abdominal segment 9 ground color with light castaneous ventral margin, dark castaneous ventroposterior corner, radiating long piceous pile. Dorsal beak with castaneous tip, twice as long as ground color anal styles. Posterior margin of abdominal segment 9 curved.

Genitalia. Male pygofer ground color, basal lobes and upper pygofer lobes ochraceous, ground color in some paratypes, dorsal beak castaneous. Dorsal beak narrow, about twice as long as ochraceous margined with castaneous anal styles. Pygofer basal lobe about half-length of pygofer, angled mediad with medially rounded apex radiating dense golden pile. Upper pygofer lobes elongated, flattened, bent at approximate right angle near base then curving ventrally (away from pygofer), with dense long golden pile. Claspers wide at base with short, finger-like, rounded medial terminus. Basal lobe appendage flattened, crossing across midline, curved with claw-like C-shape tip. Aedeagus tubular, castaneous.

Female gonocoxite IX darkened ground color. Gonapophysis IX castaneous, gonapophysis X piceous. Ovipositor sheath extends beyond dorsal beak. Long golden pile radiating from ovipositor sheath.

DIAGNOSIS. This new species is part of a group of species that are of similar size and general morphology including C. aratayensis , C. cyrili , C. dolosa , C. doxiptera , C. ensifera , C. gemella , C. hamata , C. rumipataensis n. sp., C. socia , C. ventrilloni , and C. viridicata . Carineta acommosis n. sp., C. apicalis , C. maracayensis , C. modesta , C. naponore , C. spoliata , and C. tingomariaensis n. sp. are smaller versions (body lengths less than 25 mm) with a similar appearance.

The basal pygofer lobe appendage is unique in each species of Carineta . This new species can be distinguished from C. cyrili , C. dolosa , C. doxiptera , C. rumipataensis n. sp., and C. ventrilloni by the straight rather than curved posterior margin of the operculum in these species. It can be distinguished from C. socia and C. viridicata by the lack of bronzing of the distal fore wings so that fore wing apical cells of these species possess only longitudinal lines. Specimens of C. gemella and C. lichiana have a contrasting darker abdomen rather than the abdomen the same color as the head and thorax characteristic of C. dicrophryxothrix n. sp. The pointed medial margin to the operculum rather than the rounded medial margin of this new species distinguishes C. cyrili , C. doxiptera , C. ensifera , C. gemella , C. socia , and C. viridicata . Carineta hamata is very similar in general appearance but has a piceous stripe on the ventral abdominal midline and the basal lobe appendage terminates in one long and one short point. The most similar species is C. aratayensis but this species differs in that the pygofer dorsal beak is angled ventrally rather than being straight, the pygofer upper pygofer lobes lack the long golden pile of the new species, the basal lobe appendages are thin, straight extensions with a laterally bent tip rather than the basal lobe appendages crossing across the midline with a claw-like C-shape tip, and female sternite VII has a wide notch rather than the narrow notch found in this new species.

DISTRIBUTION. The species is known only from the type series collected from several localities in Peru and Ecuador.
