Genus Nipponothracia Kanie and Sakai, 1997

Type species: Thracidora gigantea Shikama, 1968 ; Middle Miocene , central Japan .

Discussion.— Nipponothracia was initially introduced as a large, potentially symbiont−bearing thraciid from a Miocene and an Early Cretaceous methane seep deposit ( Kanie and Sakai 1997). Kase et al. (2007) recently documented an elongate anterior adductor muscle scar that is ventrally detached from the pallial line in the Miocene type species, showing that Nipponothracia belongs to the Lucinidae rather than the Thraciidae .
