Notes:— Tricentrum ovalifolium has as its original material Pr. de Neuwied s.n. deposited at herbarium Kunth (currently B) ( De Candolle 1828), but was destroyed during World War II, only leaving an F negative ( F 0 BN016843 View Materials ). A duplicate of this collection was found at BR ( BR0000008930897 , Figure 5 View FIGURE 5 ) and a fragment of the type at G ( G00310227 ; specifically at G-DC). Therefore, this name needs to be lectotypified (see Article 9.3 of the ICN). The duplicate at BR is designated here as the lectotype, according to Article 9.11 of the ICN. In this material, the nomina nuda “ Comolia ovalifolia O.Berg. View in CoL ” and “ Rhexia psammophila Mart. View in CoL ” were found ( Figure 5 View FIGURE 5 ) .
Comolia denudata was described from Sellow s.n. at P (P05287597), so it did not need to be typified. However, when Naudin (1850a) established C. denudata , he synonymized T. ovalifolium under it and did not prioritize the epithet “ ovalifolium ”, according to Article 11.3 of the ICN, thus C. denudata is considered a superfluous and illegitimate name.
Tetrameris rotundifolia was described from two collections deposited at P: Martius Herb. Fl. Bras. n. 419 and Blanchet 1688 (Naudin 1850). In this way, both collections are considered syntypes (see Article 9.6 of the ICN) . Here , Blanchet 1688 ( P00481581 ) is designated as lectotype, according to Article 9.12 of the ICN , and the duplicates ( P00481582 and P00481583 ) are the isolectotypes. The nomen nudum “ Arthrostemma rotundifolium Naudin ” was found in the remaining syntype Martius Herb. Fl. Bras. n. 419 ( P00481580 ) .
In Flora brasiliensis, Cogniaux (1885) described three varieties of Comolia ovalifolia : var. blanchetiana Cogn. , var. acutifolia Cogn. , and var. denudata Cogn. Among these varieties, C. ovalifolia var. blanchetiana needs to be neotypified (see Articles 9.8 and 9.13 of the ICN), because Blanchet 1688 part., indicated by Cogniaux (1885) as the original material of this variety, was not found in the herbaria consulted. Thus, we chose Blanchet 1689 at G (G00319188; specifically at G-DC), as it was collected by the same collector, had a collection number close to Blanchet 1688 part., and was collected in the same region of the original material analyzed by Cogniaux (1885). The other two varieties have duplicates distributed by some herbaria and Cogniaux (1885) did not indicate a duplicate as a type. Thus, according to Article 9.3 of the ICN, these names need to be typified. According to Article 9.11, the lectotypes are designated here: for C. ovalifolia var. acutifolia the duplicate at K (K000530815) was chosen, while for C. ovalifolia var. denudata the duplicate at G (G00319055; specifically at G-DC) was chosen. Besides, after analyzing the original materials of C. ovalifolia var. blanchetiana and C. ovalifolia var. denudata , we suggest that these two varieties should be considered synonyms under C. ovalifolia , considering that the species has a variation in leaf morphology ( Seco 2006).
Finally, it is worth mentioning that Martius Herb. Fl. Bras. n. 499, cataloged in Herbarium Florae brasiliensis as “ Arthrostemma villosum DC. ” ( Martius 1841), is C. ovalifolia . Labels with this determination can be found in duplicates at BR (BR0000005738984 and BR0000005739318), G (G00318931), and K (K000530816). This collection was considered “ Arthrostemma villosum Mart. ” by Cogniaux (1885) and synonymized by him under C. ovalifolia . “ Arthrostemma villosum Mart. ” is treated here as a nomen nudum because it disagrees with Article 38.1 of the ICN.
