This monotypic tribe contains 17 species, distributed widely in Central and West Africa. Members of this tribe are characterized by a strongly armed, spiny pronotum, and the presence of a unique abdomino-alary stridulatory mechanism, presumably used for defense. Recently a number of new species of the genus Pantecphylus have been described from Central Africa ( Schmidt 2003, 2006a, 2006b, 2007; Schmidt et al.2004), but only two species have been recorded from the GFWA.
