TYPE SPECIES: Hyaena brunnea Thunberg, 1820 View in CoL .

COMMENTS: Some have considered Hyaena to include brunnea , however, this would be a paraphyletic group among extant ( Werdelin and Solounias, 1991) and/or fossil taxa ( Galiano and Frailey, 1977; Hendey, 1974).
