TYPE LOCALITY: "America", restricted by Allen (1879) to " Veracruz, Mexico "; Herkovitz (1951) further restricted it to "Achotal, Isthmus of Techuantpec, Vera Cruz."
DISTRIBUTION: USA (S Arizona and SW New Mexico), south through Mexico (except Baja California), Central America ( Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama), to northernmost Colombia (Gulf of Uraba).
STATUS: CITES - Appendix III ( Honduras) as Nasua nasua (= narica ); IUCN - Insufficiently known as N. nelsoni .
