TYPE LOCALITY: "les rochers dans le voisinage de la baie San-Francisco sont ordinairement couverts de lion marins." [ USA, California, San Francisco Bay] .
DISTRIBUTION: N Pacifie from near the Mexico-Guatemala border to British Columbia ( Canada); Japan; Galapagos Isis (Gallo-Reynosa and Solorzano-Velasco, 1991).
STATUS: IUCN - Extinct? as Z. c. japonicus .
SYNONYMS: gillespii M'Bain, 1858 ; japonica Peters, 1866 ; lobatus Jentink, 1892 ; philippii Allen, 1905 ; wollebaeki Sivertsen, 1953 .
