DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to Madagascar.
STATUS: CITES - Appendix II. IUCN - Vulnerable; considered by IUCN to have high conservation priority status for viverrids ( Schreiber et al., 1989).
SYNONYMS: major Lavauden, 1929 .
COMMENTS: Includes E. major ( Albignac, 1973; Coetzee, 1977b).
