Type material. Type material is presumably lost; neotype: CAS 0 44306, designated by Ferreira 1986 .
Type locality. Loo Choo Islands for the lost types and restricted to Buckner Bay, Okinawa, Japan for the neotype.

Distribution. The species was reported from Shizuoka and Tanegashima Island, Japan, and southward to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Hainan and northern Vietnam up to Cat Ba Island.
Remarks. Acanthopleura loochooana differs from Liolophura japonica which inhabits the same area by having incompletely reduced slits in the insertion plates of the tail valve (vs. smooth insertion plates without slits of tail valve in L. japonica ).
