Type Locality: Argentina, La Rioja Prov., La Invernada, Cadena Famatina, 3,800 m.
Vernacular Names: Famatina Chinchilla Rat.
Distribution: Known from the Sierra de Famatina but Cabrera (1961) suggested possible occurrence in eastern portions of San Juan Prov., Argentina.
Discussion: Ellerman (1940) considered famatina a subspecies of cinerea but Braun and Mares (2002) recognized it as distinct.
