Note:— Piper nigrum var. macrostachyum was based on the specimen ‘Khasia mountains, Hook. f. & T. T. s.n. ’ held at G-DC. The same is also present at CAL and K with de Candolle’s annotation. Hooker (1886: 92) recognized the taxon at the specific rank as P. rhytidocarpum¸ without stating it explicitly as a replacement name for P. nigrum var. macrostachyum , so as not to create a later homonym of P. macrostachyum (C. Presl) C. DC. [1869: 371; basionym: Artanthe macrostachya C. Presl. (1851: 227) ]. Hooker (loc. cit.) needlessly cited three additional specimens: Wallich 6658B, Griffith s.n., and Chittagong, J. D. H. & T. T. s.n. Notwithstanding citation of additional material by Hooker (loc. cit.), the name P. rhytidocarpum is typified by P. nigrum var. macrostachyum C. DC. (.c.f.. Art. 7.4, McNeill et al.,2012)., with the type located at G-DC. Since only a single collection was cited, this must be accepted as the holotype. Therefore, the action by Gilbert & Xia (1999: 194) in designating ‘ Bangladesh, Chittagong, 22 Sep. 1850, Hooker & Thomson s.n.’ at K as the lectotype turns out to be incorrect. Piper glabramentum is similar to this species and hence it is recognized as a synonym. The same is true for P. crassistipes , when its holotype at BO, isotype at CAL, or the pencilled sketch of the foliage by C. de Candolle at G-DC (G 00329644) are compared.
