8. Piper japvonum C. DC. Candollea View in CoL 2: 200. 1925.

Type:— INDIA: Manipur, Japvo, G. Watt 6325 (holotype CAL!; isotypes E00313753 image!, K image 000794453!) .

Distribution:— INDIA: Manipur.

Note: —Casimir de Candolle cited the specimen at CAL as the type. There he attached a scrap with a note in 1911 stating “not to be published because of spike being loose”. This specimen is without any spike at present, which was presumably lost during preservation. Fortunately, the duplicates at E and K (stored as P. suipigua Buch. -Ham. ex D. Don (1825: 20) have the reproductive structures. D. G. Long (1984) incorrectly considered this species to be similar to P. suipigua . Piper japvonum in general appearance is blackish, has ovate to caudate leaves, fruiting spikes less than half the length of the lamina, rachis hirsute, fruits packed, ovate, stigmas 4. Piper suipigua on drying appears pale green or lighter, has elliptic or elliptic-lanceolate leaves, fruiting spikes shorter or longer than lamina, rachis densely tomentose, fruits loosely packed, fruits ovoid and 3 stigmas.
