( Figs. 45–49 View FIGURES 37 – 45. 37 – 39 View FIGURES 46 – 58. 46 – 49 )

Description. Integument dark-brown; head reddish-brown, except for wide band behind inferior ocular lobes; maxillary palpomeres I–III and labial palpomeres I–II yellow; last maxillary and labial palpomere dark-brown; antennomere III orange; antennomeres IV–VII orange with apex narrowly dark-brown; antennomere VII orange at basal two-thirds, dark-brown at distal one-third; antennomere IX orange at basal one-fourth, dark-brown at distal three-fourths; elytra with dark-orange sutural band from scutellum to near distal one-fourth; lateral margin of elytra with narrow reddish-orange edge; femora orange; protibiae orange on basal half; meso- and metatibiae orange on basal one-third.

Head. Frons wider than long; coarsely, abundantly punctate; pubescence grayish-white (becoming orange depending on angle of light source), not obscuring integument, long, sparse setae intermixed. Antennal tubercles pubescent, long setae intermixed as on frons. Coronal suture distinct from clypeus to anterior edge of prothorax. Vertex coarsely, sparsely punctate; pubescence whitish-gray, dense, obscuring the integument except along coronal suture; moderately abundant long setae interspersed. Area behind eyes, and most of genae with sculpture, pubescence and setae as on frons (punctures coarser, denser, behind inferior ocular lobes); distal area of genae glabrous, shiny and smooth. Distance between superior ocular lobes equal to 0.4 times scape length; distance between inferior ocular lobes, in frontal view, equal to 0.8 times scape length. Antennae as long as 1.55 times elytral length, attaining elytral apex near base of antennomere IX; scape, pedicel, and antennomeres III–XI with long, dark-brown setae regularly dispersed throughout except sparser and shorter towards antennomere XI; antennomeres antennal formula (ratio) based on antennomere III: scape = 0.75; pedicel = 0.13; IV = 0.68; V = 0.38; VI = 0.34; VII = 0.27; VIII = 0.25; IX = 0.23; X = 0.20; XI = 0.24.

Thorax. Prothorax with a rounded tubercle laterally near middle. Pronotum coarsely, abundantly punctate (punctures partially confluent on middle); pubescence grayish-white on wide longitudinal band and transverse basal band but not obscuring integument; laterally dense, grayish to golden-white to orange, depending on angle of light source; with abundant, long setae interspersed. Apically, prothorax with pubescence as on lateral side of pronotum (continuing lateral pubescence of pronotum). Pubescence on ventral side of thorax grayish-white, not obscuring integument. Elytra coarsely, abundantly, punctate (punctures deeper on basal one-third, gradually shallower towards apex; partially aligned in rows); pubescence reddish-brown with gray reflections (depending on angle of light source), mainly along suture; with long, abundant setae; humeral carina very distinct from base to distal one-fifth; lateral carina placed near middle between humeral carina and margin, distinct from base to distal one-fifth; apex truncate, outer angle with short, distinct spine.

Abdomen. Urosternites with grayish-white pubescence (reddish depending on angle of light source), not obscruring integument, except laterally on urosternites I–IV, where the white pubescence is distinctly denser; moderately long, sparse setae intermixed. Legs. Metatarsomere I as long as 0.7 times II–III together.

Dimensions in mm (male). Total length, 7.9; length of prothorax at center, 1.5; widest width of prothorax, 2.0; anterior width of prothorax, 1.6; posterior width of prothorax, 1.8; humeral width, 2.4; elytral length, 5.6.

Type material. Holotype female from MEXICO, Veracruz: 1 mile E Rinconada, 25.X.1979, J. E. Wappes col. ( USNM).

Diagnosis. Piruanycha wappesi differs from the other species of the genus by antennomere III with long setae throughout (only on ventral side in the other species), and by the tarsomeres proportionally smaller and narrower ( Fig. 45 View FIGURES 37 – 45. 37 – 39 ) (larger and wider in the other species ( Fig. 44 View FIGURES 37 – 45. 37 – 39 )).

Etymology. The species is named for James E. Wappes (ACMT), for his friendship and constant help with providing specimens for study.
