Taxonomy. Heteromys goldmani Merriam, 1902 View in CoL ,
Chicharras, Chiapas, Mexico.
This species is a member of the desmarestianus species group along with H. desmarestianus , H. nubicolens , and H. oresterus . It is sister-taxon to one of potentially five cryptic species within H. desmarestianus . It was initially described as a species but subsumed under H. desmarestianus on the basis of external, cranial, and bacular morphology, and then again recognized as a distinct species based on karyotype, fixed allozymic differences, and molecular sequence distance.
Monotypic.
Distribution. SE Mexico and SW Guatemala (heavily forested Pacific slope of Sierra Madre, 45-1860 m). View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body mean 147 mm, tail mean 190 mm, ear mean 18 mm, hindfoot mean 36 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. There is no significant secondary sexual dimorphism. Goldman’s Spiny Pocket Mouseis a scansorial rodent, somewhat large-sized for the genus, with coarse adult pelage having abundant stuff, flattened spine-like hairs on dorsal and lateral surfaces of body. Upper parts are gray to slate black, with a sprinkling of ocherous hairs and no buffy lateral line, and belly is white. Ears are without a white edging. Posterior parts of soles of hindfeet are naked and have six tubercles. Tail is much longer than head-body length, thinly haired, and bicolored. Chromosomal complement has 2n = 60 and FN = 76.
Habitat. Restricted to the heavily forested Pacific slope of the Sierra Madre in extreme southern Chiapas and adjacent Guatemala at elevations of 45-1860 m.

Activity patterns. Goldman’s Spiny Pocket mouse is nocturnal and terrestrial.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. Goldman's Spiny Pocket Mouse has been observed living in pairs during the breeding season, and groups of six or more also have been reported sharing a burrow system while breeding.
Status and Conservation. Classified as Least Concern on The [UCN Red List (as a synonym of H. desmarestianus ).
