Curculio octomaculata Pelsue and Zhang View in CoL , new species

(Figs. 15, 16, 25)

Holotype. China. Liuyang female [ China / Hunan Province /Liuyang/ 25 August 1984 / FRIHN] ( IZAS).

Paratype. (1) China. Liuyang female [ China / Hunan Province /Liuyang/ 25 August 1984 / FRIHN] ( FWPC) .

Description. Female. Length: 4.5 mm. Width: 2.4 mm. Head: 0.6 as broad as thorax; punctures

small, irregular ridges; glabrous; frons 0.24 as broad as head across eyes, clothed with small,

narrow, elongate, clavate, white scales. Rostrum: length: 4.0 mm; 0.88 as long as body; derm

piceous; broad at base tapering to cylindrical apex; abruptly emerging from frons; punctures small,

vitta of small, narrow, elongate, white scales from base to ½ way to antennal insertion; straight to

insertion of scape then abruptly deflected to broader apex; scrobe ventral; scape inserted in basal ½.

Antennae: length: scape 1.5 mm, funicle 1.3 mm, club 0.5 mm; scape as long as funicle; funicular

segment 2 as long as 1, 3 and 4 same length, 6 longer than 5 and 7; segment 1 of club longer than

funicular segment 7; club longer than funicular segments 5–7. Thorax: length: 1.6 mm. width: 2.0

mm. 0.8 as long as broad, derm piceous; not as broad as base of elytra, margins rounded to

constriction; disc subconvex in lateral view, punctures small, appearing rough, laterobasal macula

of recumbent, clavate, white scales; mesosternal intercoxal process visible; scutellum small, as

broad as long, piceous; mesepimeron densely clothed with recumbent, clavate, cretaceous scales;

mesepisternum clothed with few round basal scales; metepisternum with posterior macula of

clavate, cretaceous scales; metasternum with large, deep punctures with anterior fascia of clavate,

white scales. Elytra: striae broad, deep, with large punctures; disc flat in lateral view; humeri

broadly rounded, prominent; intervals narrow with small, elongate, testaceous scales along margin,

short basal vittae on intervals 2–3 of clavate cretaceous scales flanking scutellum, macula on

intervals 2–4 of clavate, cretaceous scales; short vittae on apical intervals 2–3 of clavate cretaceous

scales; crosshatch setae long, erect, piceous. Legs: pro- mesofemoral teeth small, acute,

metafemoral tooth medium; metafemur exceeds apex of elytra by length of clava; clothed with

narrow, elongate, white scales; tibiae subsinuate, pro- mesouncus medium as long as tarsal claw,

metauncus small. Abdomen: sternite 1 as long as 2 behind coxal cavity; 2 as long as 3–4; 5 as long

as 3–4, truncate apex; sternites 1–2 clothed with short, clavate, white scales. Pygidium : small.

Genitalia: spermatheca: ramus curled over collum, but appears dome shaped with rounded apex;

collum appears broadly rounded; cornu evenly broad to rounded apex (Fig. 25); not able to get

a true representation of this structure.

Remarks. This species appears somewhat similar to Curculio commodus (Marshall) having on the elytra 3 short vittae flanking a piceous scutellum rather than 2, with median short vittae on intervals 2–3 rather than 3 on intervals 2–4 as in C. octomaculata . Also, similar to Curculio sexpunctatus (Heller) by having 2 discrete vittae flanking scutellum and 3 short median vittae at midpoint of elytra, but C. sexpunctatus legs do not exceed the apex of the elytra.

Etymology. The specific epithet combines the Latin noun ‘‘octo,’’ meaning ‘‘eight,’’ and the Latin noun ‘‘macula,’’ meaning ‘‘spot.’’
