Diagnosis. Nemophora japonica is similar to N. spinatibaltea sp. nov. and N. apiciprocessa sp. nov. in appearance, and the differences between them are stated in the diagnoses of N. spinatibaltea and N. apiciprocessa .
Description. Adult ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13‒18 ). Male wingspan 16.5−21.5 mm.
Head: Vertex yellow; frons purplish yellow. Eye interocular index 0.43−0.52. Proboscis yellow. Labial palpus 0.8−1.2 × vertical eye diameter; first and second palpomeres yellow, with black hairs; third palpomere brown. Antenna 3.1−3.5 × length of forewing; scape bronzy; flagellum yellowish brown except dark brown in basal 1/4.
Thorax: Mesonotum golden yellow; tegula bronzy except purple distally. Forewing ground color yellowish brown; four silvery gray streaks, edged with black scales, with golden luster: first streak from base to 2/5 along costal margin, with purplish bronzy luster, second streak from basal 2/5 to 3/4 of cell along anterior margin, third streak from near base to 3/4 of cell along posterior margin, fourth streak from near base to 1/3 of wing along 1A+2A; four black lines: first line from near base to 2/5 of wing along R 1, second line from basal 1/3 to near 2/3 of cell, third line from near base to near 2/5 of wing along CuP, fourth line from base to middle along dorsum; inner and outer fasciae silvery gray, inner fascia curved outward, outer fascia curved inward, medial fascia yellow, narrowed from anterior 1/3 to 3/5, edged with narrow dark yellowish brown bands; dense dark brown scales from distal 1/4 to near apex between costal margin and R 4, forming a triangular dark brown speckle; dark brown stripes radiate and narrowed from distal 1/4 to near apex and termen posteriorly; rectangular silvery gray patch between dark brown speckle and upmost stripe; fringe brown. Hindwing grayish brown except light brown between costal margin and Rs; fringe grayish brown. Foreleg yellow ventrally, purplish bronzy except tibia bluish brown dorsally; midleg yellow except tibia purplish bronzy dorsally; hindleg yellow except tibia bronzy apically. Epiphysis brown, at middle of tibia, not reaching apex of tibia.
Abdomen: Dark brown.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 33‒38 ). Socius ovoid, length 1.7 × width. Tegumen with distinct median ridge. Uncus triangular, roundly concave anteromedially. Valva subtriangular, separated basally, broadly rounded at apex, straight on costal margin, obliquely straight on ventral margin; sacculus rectangular, extending to basal 1/5 of ventral margin. Transtilla with a round emargination anteromedially, subtriangular anterolaterally; median process spiniform, reaching posterior 2/5 of tegumen apically. Vinculum 2.3 × length of valva, broadly rounded anteriorly. Phallus 1.1 × length of vinculum, straight, with denticles from distal 1/3 to 1/8 ( Fig. 36a View FIGURES 33‒38 ). Juxta 0.71 × length of phallus; lateral arm 0.23 × length of arrow head.
Distribution. China (Guangxi, Henan, Shaanxi), Japan, Russia.
Remarks. This species is recorded for the first time in China.
