Type locality. Unknown. Pourtalès (1878) mentioned that the locality label was lost.
Type material. Not determined.
Geographic and bathymetric range. Western Atlantic (Florida Keys*, Bahamas, southeastern Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean coast from Mexico to Venezuela, Antillean Arc from Cuba to Barbados and Grenada, and Brazil), at depths from 10 to 567 m ( Meyer et al. 1978; Alvarado 2011; Benavides-Serrato et al. 2012; Cambronero-Solano et al. 2019; *C.G. Messing, personal communication).
Brazilian localities. Maranhão, Pernambuco (São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago), Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo (A.H. Clark 1931; Tommasi 1963, 1965 1969b; Tommasi et al. 1988a; GBIF; IZ Database).
