73. Caroxylon rabieanum (I.Verd.) Mucina View in CoL comb. nov.

Basionym: ― Salsola rabieana I.Verd. View in CoL in Bothalia 6, 1: 218, fig. 3 (1951).

Type: ― SOUTH AFRICA. Orange Free State [Free State Prov.]: Dist. Fauresmith, Driefontein , limestone in brak veld, 12 April 1945, Henrici 2885a (holotype PRE-0372169-0!; isotype PRE-0372168-0!,)

Salsola aphylla var. virescens Fenzl ex Drège in Flora 2, Beigabe: 58, 59, 217 (1843), nom. nud. (Art. 38.1a of ICN).

Notes: ― Botschantzev (1974a: 608) considered Salsola rabieana to be an apparent hybrid between S. albida and S. glabrescens to which it is supposedly ‘connected by a continuous series of transitional forms’. This remark confirms the complexity facing the alpha-taxonomic revision of the genus Caroxylon .

Distribution: ― Namibia : regions of Karas, Maltahöhe and Windhoek, Skeleton Coast?, Kaokoveld?; Botswana: SW Ghanzi and Kgalagadi Districts, Nwatle Pan; South Africa (NC, FS): widely distributed in Bushmanland, eastern Upper Karoo, Gordonia, Griqualand West.
