DISTRIBUTION. — Indo-Pacific, intertidal and subtidal ( Cernohorsky 1978). Indian Ocean, from the Red Sea southward to South Africa (Kosuge & Meyer 1999) and the tropical and subtropical zone, including Eastern Arabia “among corals” ( Bosch et al. 1995). Western Pacific Ocean, intertidal to 20 m depth associated with scleractinians (Tsuchiya 2000). From the Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Loyalty Islands and Fiji, live in 13-40 m, empty shells in 5-65 m (with 2 records from 100-122 m),
REMARKS. — The protoconch of a single juvenile was available, very corroded. Only traces of the axial threads were visible, but the general outline clearly indicates a multispiral type. Coralliophila mira ( Cotton & Godfrey, 1932) from southern Australia is very similar and possibly phylogenetically related.
The handwritten note by Lamarck’s daughter indicates a single original specimen that may be MHNG 1099/60/1, 34.0 mm, possibly the shell figured by Lamarck. The second specimen in the lot (MHNG 1099/60/2, 26.4 mm), significantly smaller than indicated by Lamarck (35 mm), was probably added later (Y. Finet, pers. comm.).
