Anthomyia cana Walker, 1849: 929 View in CoL .

Lispa cana .— Stein, 1919: 142; Malloch, 1923: 607; Malloch, 1925a: 333, 335; Lee, Crust & Sabrosky, 1956: 311.

Lispe cana .— Séguy, 1937: 183; Pont, 1983: 189; Pont, 1989: 693.

Type-material. The holotype ♂, from " New Holland ", is in the BMNH and has been studied by me. It was earlier seen by Stein (1901: 191). It is in excellent condition.

Diagnosis. In the group of species with setulae present on meron below spiracle ( Fig. 337 View FIGURES 334–338 ), L. cana can be recognised by the presence of 3 well-developed post dc setae; in addition, the ♂ has the vibrissa absent ( Fig. 334 View FIGURES 334–338 ), and the ♀ abdomen lacks dark markings except for a poorly defined median vitta and a pair of small weakly marked spots on tergite 5.

Description ♂ ♀. Head ( Fig. 334 View FIGURES 334–338 ). Ground-colour black. Frons at broadest point 0.41–0.42, at lunula 0.34 (♂) or 0.38 (♀), of maximum head-width (frontal view). Fronto-orbital plate in ♂ silvery-white on upper half, tinged with brownish above and subshining at vertex, often more extensively brown in ♀; frontal triangle, parafacial, face and gena silvery-white pruinose, often partly or mainly or wholly yellow in ♀, sometimes even golden; frontal triangle very broad, frontal vitta almost totally suppressed so that entire frons appears silvery (♂) or yellowish to golden to brown (♀); occiput grey, silvery-white below. Ocellar setae fine. Upper orbital seta short, lower one weak and hardly distinct from the ground-setulae in ♂, both setae distinct and well-developed in ♀. Parafacial broad, as broad as postpedicel; setulae only present on lower part. Antenna black, pedicel orange at tip; postpedicel short, 2.0 times as long as broad, falling short of mouth-margin by almost its length. Arista short-plumose, the hairing present only on dorsal surface and at widest point 0.5 (♂) or 0.4 (♀) times width of postpedicel. Vibrissa very reduced and represented by a setula in ♂, strong in ♀, with few adjacent setulae. Gena broad, 0.23 (♂) or 0.29 (♀) of vertical eye-length; genal setae rather dense, sparser just before vibrissal area. Palpus yellow, abruptly swollen in apical part ( Fig. 335 View FIGURES 334–338 ).

Thorax. Ground-colour black. Scutum and scutellum rather matt, thinly dull grey dusted in ♂, lighter and more densely dusted in ♀, postpronotal lobe and notopleuron whitish, pleura grey. Viewed from behind, scutum in ♂ with lighter grey dusted markings as follows: usually a median vitta from neck to suture; a narrow prst band along suture from notopleuron to dc; and a pair of broad post vittae between dc and ia, reaching scutellum; in ♀ with darker, brownish markings as follows: a pair of vittae just mesad of dc from neck to suture or just beyond; a pair of prst patches around ia and sa setae; the dusting of ♀ sometimes tinged with yellow, especially before suture; scutellum wholly grey dusted, brown at tip in ♀. Anterior spiracle brownish. Acr setulae in 6 irregular rows at suture, sometimes with a pair of prst setae. Dc 2+3, all strong. 2 pprn. 1+2 ia, anterior post seta sometimes absent. 1+1 sa, both strong. 1 strong and 1 weaker proepisternal setae. 1 strong proepimeral, shorter than the strong proepisternal, with 6–8 adjacent setulae. Anepisternum with a very short seta in upper anterior corner; posterior row with 4 strong and 1–2 weak setae. 3 strong kepst, lower one closer to posterior than to anterior. Meron with a group of 4–7 conspicuous setulae below spiracle ( Fig. 337 View FIGURES 334–338 ), bare above hind coxa. Scutellum with disc densely setulose, 2 rows descending on to sides, otherwise sides and ventral surface bare.

Legs. Black, base of tibiae and ventral area of some tarsomeres reddish. Fore coxa bare behind. Fore femur on av surface with short setulae near base, otherwise bare; pv row complete, the setae fine, only those in basal half longer than femoral depth and interspersed with shorter setulae; pd row complete. Fore tibia with a long submedian p seta; with strong d, p and pv apical setae. Fore tarsomeres 2–4 of ♂ rather short, not as long as tarsomere 1, otherwise fore tarsomeres without modifications. Mid femur with a row of short fine av setae in ♂, reduced to setulae in ♀; pv surface with a row of fine setae in basal half, longer than femoral depth in ♂ but usually rather shorter in ♀; a surface without differentiated setae; 2 p preapicals. Mid tibia with 1 strong p seta; with strong d, a, v, pd, pv and short p apicals, the d apical a little before apex. Mid tarsomeres without modifications. Hind coxa bare on posterior apical margin. Hind femur with 1–3 av setae around middle, generally only 1 in ♀, longer than femoral depth; pv surface with 3–6 fine setae in basal half, several longer than femoral depth; ad row complete; 1 d preapical. Hind tibia with 0 (♂) or 1 long (♀) ad seta; ground-setulae on ad surface long, fine and erect, especially in ♂; without av or pd setae; d and ad preapicals long and strong, the d placed well before apex ( Fig. 338 View FIGURES 334–338 ); av apical seta short but strong; in ♂ with a few long fine hair-like setae at apex of v and pv surfaces, ♀ without these setulae and with a pv apical seta. Hind tarsus of ♂ with basal tarsomere short, flattened, greatly expanded on posterior side, and with a dense brush of black setulae along p to pv surfaces ( Fig. 338 View FIGURES 334–338 ); without modifications in ♀.

Wing. Clear. Tegula mostly black, basicosta yellow. Crossvein r-m placed slightly apicad of the point where vein R1 enters costa; dm-cu curved (♂) or sinuous (♀), longer than apical section of vein CuA1. Vein M running straight to wing-margin. Calypters white, margins creamy. Knob of haltere orange, partly darkened.

Abdomen. Ground-colour black. Wholly dusted, in posterior view the dust light grey (♂) or grey, sometimes tinged with yellow (♀), without dark markings except for a weakly indicated median vitta on tergites 3 and 4 in ♂, and in ♀ with a weakly defined median vitta on syntergite 1+2 and tergites 3–5, and on tergite 5 with a pair of poorly defined darker spots. ♂ epandrium grey dusted. ♀ ovipositor with exposed tergites dusted grey. Sternites 1– 5 grey dusted. Setae only present on tergite 5, with 3–4 pairs of discals in ♂, and 4 pairs of marginals, these weak in ♀. ♂ sternites 2–4 setulose, those on sternite 2 long and setose ( Fig. 336 View FIGURES 334–338 ).

Ƌ terminalia. Epandrium separated from tergite 5 by syntergosternite 8, which has 2 spiracles; with a long process at antero-ventral corner, ventrad of the lobe that connects with the hypandrium and is directed forwards ( Fig. 339 View FIGURES 339–340 ). Tergite 6 absent. Sternite 6 small, subquadrate, withdrawn beneath sternite 5 and connected to it by two triangular plates. Surstylus absent, i.e. fused to epandrium without trace ( Fig. 339 View FIGURES 339–340 ). Cercal plate deeply divided dorsally ( Fig. 340 View FIGURES 339–340 ). Hypandrium attached at two points: to a rod originating from wall of epandrium close to upper outer edge of cercal plate; and via an apparent praegonite to lower anterior corner of epandrium. Phallic complex ( Fig. 341 View FIGURE 341 ): hypandrium branching posteriorly, the upper pair of branches meeting behind base of phallus; praegonite and postgonite present, the latter very short; phallapodeme long but normal in structure, at mid-length connected to hypandrium by a bridge; phallus long, tubular, simple, juxta large, without spinules; basal part consisting of a multi-toothed process.

♀ ovipositor ( Figs 342–344 View FIGURES 342–344 ). Tergite 6 complete; tergite 7 narrowly divided medially; tergite 8 divided dorsally, each half displaced laterally, bare. Sternite 6 reduced to 2 small weakly-sclerotised plates; sternite 7 present as a small plate; sternite 8 represented by 2 plates that are entirely concealed by the invaginated membrane after segment 8. Epiproct narrow, with 1 seta, connected to cercus. Hypoproct large, extended posteriorly, with several stout spines at apex. Cercus broad, plate-like, without spines. 3 spermathecae.

Measurements. Wing-length, 4.0– 5.5 mm (♂), 5.0– 6.5 mm (♀). Body-length, 5.5–7.0 mm (♂), 6.5–8.0 mm (♀).

Note. A few specimens have been seen with 4 instead of 3 post dc, but such specimens can be recognised by the characteristic head-profile of L. cana together with other characters of the species.

Biology. It has been collected many times on beaches and on stranded and rotting seaweeds. It was reared once (D.K. McAlpine) but it was not stated where the puparia were found.

Distribution. Known only from Australia and western Oceania: Australia (WA, Q, NSW, V, SA, T), Lord Howe Island, Indonesia (Maluku: Buru Island), Papua New Guinea, Solomon Is (Rennell Island), New Caledonia, Western Samoa ( Pont, 1989; Couri, Pont & Daugeron, 2010), though some of these records require confirmation in the light of the additional species recognised from the cana -group in this paper.
