Haematotrephus lanceolatum ( Wedl, 1858) View in CoL — Type species
Type host. “Stilt”, Himantopus rubropterus Brand (reported by Yamaguti 1971 as Himantopus candidus [Bonnaterre]), but neither are valid species of birds. There are two species of Himantopus Brisson world wide: the black-winged or common stilt, Himantopus himantopus (Linnaeus) and the black-necked stilt, Himantopus mexicanus Müller ( Charadriiformes : Recurvirostridae ), and only H. himantopus would likely be present in Europe.
Type locality. Rome, Italy.
Estimated frοm figure in οriginal descriptiοn. 2Measurements frοm Stοssich (1902). 3Estimated frοm figures οf Stοssich (1902). 4Measurements frοm Neuchatel Cοllectiοn given by Dubοis (1959).
Estimated frοm figure in οriginal descriptiοn.
Additional hosts. Temminck’s stint, Calidris temminckii (Leisier) ; terek sandpiper, Xenus cinereus (Güldenstädt) (Syn. Terekia cinerea Güldenstädt ); pintail snipe, Gallinago stenura (Bonnaparte) (Syn. Capella stenura Kuhl ); the ruff, Philomachus pugnax (Linnaeus) ( Charadriiformes : Scolopacidae ); little ringed plover, Charadrius dubius Scopoli ; red-wattled lapwing, Vanellus indicus (Boddaert) (Syn. Lobivanellus indicus [Boddaert]); long-toed lapwing, Vanellus crassirostris (Hartlaub) (Syn. Hemiparra crassisrostris [Hartlaub]); northern lapwing, Vanellus vanellus (Linnaeus) ( Charadriiformes : Charadriidae ); Himantopus melanopterus (Temmick) (unknown species)— Yamaguti (1971).
Additional localities. India; Western Siberia, the Russian Federation; Tonkin, Vietnam; Democratic Republic of the Congo; Europe—Yamaguti (1971).
Previously proposed synonyms. Cyclocoelum titiri Chatterji, 1958 (= Uvitellina titiri [ Chatterji,1958]) n. comb.); Cyclocoelum (U.) dollfusi Tseng, 1930 (= Morishitium dollfusi [ Timon-David, 1950]); Haematotrephus simile Stossich, 1902 (= Uvitellina simile [ Stossich, 1902] n. comb.); Haematotrephus consimilis Nicoll, 1914 ; Haematotrephus adelphus Johnston, 1917 ; Haematotrephus (Haematotrephus) lobivanelli Gupta, 1958 ; Uvitellina pseudocotylea Witenberg, 1923 ; Uvitellina magniembria Witenberg, 1923 ; Uvitellina keri Yamaguti, 1933 ; Uvitellina tageri Yamaguti, 1933 ; Uvitellina macroisophaga Hannum & Wilson, 1934 — Dubois (1959).
Remarks. This species was originally described as Monostomum lanceolatum Wedl, 1858 , but it was redescribed and transferred to Haematotrephus by Stossich (1902) who provided only a body length. Stunkard (1966) redescribed what he thought was this species from the air sacs of the American avocet, Recurvirostra americana (Gmelin) ( Charadriiformes : Recurvirostridae ), from the southwestern United States (precise locality unknown). Although the specimens he used for the redescription have a pretesticular ovary that forms a triangle with the testes (Haematotrephinae) and the genital pore is postpharyngeal, the vitelline fields are confluent posteriorly (= Uvitellina ); and therefore, this species would not represent Haematotrephus . No oral or ventral sucker described—Stossich (1902).
