P. costaricensis ( Brenes & Arroyo, 1962) n. comb.
Type host. Blue-crowned motmot, Momotus momota (Linnaeus) ( Coraciiformes : Momotidae ).
Type locality. Quepos, Puntarenas Province, Republic of Costa Rica.
Remarks. This species was originally described as Cyclocoelum (Hyptiasmus) costaricensis Brenes & Arroyo, 1962 . It has an intertesticular ovary that forms a triangle with the testes (Cyclocoelinae) and a postpharyngeal genital pore suggesting placement in Selfcoelum ; however, unlike species of Selfcoelum , the vitelline fields are confluent posteriorly (“vitelline glands are formed by numerous follicles which are attached posteriorly”) ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 of Brenes & Arroyo 1962) in this species, placing it in Psophiatrema. Psophiatrema costaricensis n. comb. differs from Psophiatrema greineri Dronen & Kinsella, 2009 only in that it lacks a rudimentary oral sucker. Given the localities where these two species were found ( Republic of Costa Rica, southern Central America vs Guyana, northern South America, respectively) and the problems related to distinguishing a rudimentary oral sucker in cyclocoelids (discussed later in this paper) it is possible that these two species are synonymous. No oral or ventral sucker described—Brenes & Arroyo (1962).
